This article is from nfl.com. In it they list the most under appreciated player from each team.

I hope Jenkins can bring out Williams best qualities. William just makes unclutch plays unless it's a hail mary in the regular season. Him not being a more consistent player is what holds him back the most. Which is mostly due to experience and William doesn't have elite IQ yet.

Then, you got some painfully average playcalling where players aren't assigned in position to make a clutch play in the playoffs.

So, because of the lead in, asking if anyone is more versatile than Bubba Baker, curiosity got the better of me and I read the first paragraph, which reminded me why I don't read crap from nfl.com.

As for Williams... I assume it is Marcus Williams? I wonder why he's so underappreciated.

*WHIFF!*
Oh...
*WHIFF!*
yeah...

Now I remember...

I will always accept the neg reps for defending Williams.

Marcus Willams plays at an All-Pro level. We would look like our 2012 defense if he wasn't on the team.

He has the same issue that every safety who has ever played for Dennis Allen has had. DA has no idea how to call clutch time defense. That's your 3rd downs, 2 min offense, etc. He gets that from his time under Greg Williams. His playcalling puts our back 7 out of position in the most crucial times, and Marcus has to be back there to clean it up. That's the reason why he, Harper, Bryd, Jenkins, Vaccaro , ect. always had missed tackles and late coverage and everything else. They can't play their assignment because they are constantly trying to cover for the chaos happening in front of them.

The most recent example is the decision to have Patrick Robinson go press up on Adam Theilan on the biggest play of overtime of this latest playoff game. The same Adam Theilan that cooked a much better Lattimore all game. The same Patrick Robinson who had shown he couldn't guard a soul all year. And of course he got burnt. So you say well Marcus Williams should have been there over the top. Nope. There's nothing you can do when a cb gets beat that quickly. And that was a check at the line because I'm sure Cousins couldn't believe we would try that. That's 100% on Allen. I don't even blame Robinson for that. This is what Marcus Williams deals with every single play.

Still can't believe we didn't call a time out to regroup

I said it in another thread (though rather derogatorily, at that), but there's a reason most platforms have him as a top safety. Those "whiffs" fans throw at him, while egregious, can typically attributed to coaching and/or other players not doing their jobs. He's got a ton of talent, and he's shown it, but wrongfully gets the Klein treatment. I'll say it again; can he improve? Definitely, but it doesn't change the fact that he's a top safety in the league.

Malik Hooker.

Keeps Lattimore happy too.

Side note: out of interest, I watched the Saints highlights of each game of the previous season, and I’ve seen one too many times where Marcus Williams goes for a tackle, And misses. He also never wraps up...

...Surprised he doesn’t have Cromartie amount of kids

I suspect I'll be one of very few who will agree.
Well, depends...

By fans... It's William/ Peat

By playing time... Murray. Easily.

99% of the time... William is one of my favorites. When the team goes on a defensive tear in the regular season in 17,18,19... He's elite, but he always end up running out of steam or going on a cold streak at the worst possible time. A good majority of it is unable to help or clean up errors.

I can lay down the argument that the inital technical error wasn't ever his fault, but you depend on him to help. He consistently comes up short.

Diggs
Woods
Thelien

Then, you got a blown wide open Devin vs. Carolina and a lucky tip interception against Eagles to stop a possible game winning against aback up QB.

I just want Williams that balls out for 6 or 8 games straight when the defense averages like 13-17 points a game, but in the playoffs.

I hope Jenkins higher IQ, leadership can help Williams with his tiny inconsistency in crunch time.

Even... Then... The offense has to produce better in the playoffs. In the last 7 games.. We've only scored more than 24 points... Twice.

I think we can all agree Williams is one of the more perplexing players we’ve had in recent memory, I personally hope he stays a Saint after his rookie deal. He is so young and 80% of safety is mental. He has so much room to grow in terms of learning the game.

Another reason I give the Jenkins signing an A+. I’m expecting big things from Williams this year.

With the Diggs thing, he was a rookie, went for the big hit and didn't keep his head up. It was a terrible time for a rookie mistake but that's exactly what it was. The other ones are largely on playcalling as well as the initial coverage being horrible. Even when we go on those defensive tears you mentioned we're still consistently bad at 3rd and longs as well as end of half defense. I think part of it is mental too, one of those things where the man goes "Last time this happened and I have to make sure it doesn't happen again" and next thing you know he's in a similar position and it's gone sideways again. Hopefully Jenkins cooler head helps Williams to calm down in those moments, and on top of that hopefully Allen does some self-scouting (or Payton) does it for him, and it all comes together.

I do agree about the offense in the playoffs as well. They need to perform better. I think Sanders will help with that a lot, just having another receiver they need to account for besides CGM should really help the offense, and that's without accounting for Cook having another year in the offense and hopefully a fit and firing Alvin Kamara. The playcalling on offense in the playoffs could use some work too for that matter.

A great example of "The plural of anecdote is not data". Also a great example of one of our great flaws as a species, we will take a mountain of observations and form our opinion of the memorable few.

Side note, they listed the 10 worst tackling starting safeties in the league percentage based on tackle opportunities and missed tackles, and Williams wasn’t in the list. I’ll take his elite coverage ability with that.
