If Gregg Williams was Saints DC with the talent they have now... (1 Viewer)

Not sure why you bring this up? I'm not the biggest Allen fan but so far so good this year. I'm not impressed with what he's done with the DBs in the past but Bell and Apple/Crawley weren't ideal in coverage. He doesn't have many excuses left this year with the Jenkins projecting to be upgrades in coverage.

I liked Williams when we got him because of how weak we had been there, but he is high risk-reward. His defenses have been all over the map. I think that is a reflection of his style. I wouldn't say he elevates a defense, it's more that he can be lucky taking gambles. I think he can have an amazing run one year than with the same defense be bad the next.

If... then...

GW would have left bodies scattered across the field... of course they would all be Saints players that he threw under the bus to save his own skin!

Don't remind us of that game. lol. I truly believe had we won that game we would have won the SB that year. Dang it!!!!

Yep. It is one of a handful of Saints games that I will never go back and watch again. Even though it was an entertaining game.

When Jimmy Graham has that long TD, after the two Niners collided when attempting to tackle him, I thought for sure we had that game. However, in typical Saints fashion, the game was far from over, and what could go wrong, went wrong. I think the play that bothered me the most, was the long TD run by Alex Smith.

Payton isn’t ALL about his system. I felt like WILLIAMS was all about his system. Players wouldn’t shine.
Also, we’d never have the talent we have now is WILLIAMS was coordinator.

Same here. After Graham scored that TD, I kept telling myself please watch out for Vernon Davis. He's the only one on
that Niners offense who can hurt us. Williams single covered him with a safety on two critical plays. An average Qb could
easily read that mismatch. The Giants learned from our mistake. The following week he was covered by a Cb. with safety
help the entire game.

I was AT that game. Crushing. We would have won it all that year, we had destroyed that Giants team not long before.

It will be interesting to see how Williams is viewed as time goes by. Without him I don't know if the Saints ever win a Super Bowl. But he brought so much shame and dishonor to the franchise. He betrayed his men to save his skin. I have no respect for that coward but at the same time I'm grateful that he helped us win it all.

He coached some very talented defenses in Tennesse, Buffalo, and Washington. The more talent he had the more turnovers his defenses recorded. That's his MO. Create pressure and generate turnovers. I don't know if that style would work today though.

The best line I read about GW was he helped us win a super bowl and cost us another one.

I heard that was a rough crowd. The following week the SF police dept. sent under cover officers disguised as giants
fans into the crowd.

On paper, the 2009 Saints don’t come close to the defensive talent on this team. Makes me wonder what Gregg Williams could have done with this type of talent and depth.

Greg Williams is a turnaround coach. He goes into crappy situations, usually where there is low morale and through his fiery personality, he reignites the passion in his players. But that energy boost seems to only last 2-3 years before the players seem to start to perform at a lower level. It might be fun to see what he can do with this defense for 1-2 years but Loomis, Ireland and SP built a defense with a precise team-centered character that doesn't depend on been fired-up through the roof every play. Greg is a prima donna. That starts to breed into his players with success. That would not fit into this SP team today for very long.
