PFF Mock has Saints taking Georgia QB Jamie Newman in second (1 Viewer)

I wonder how many of these mock drafts people actually get right. Seems there are about 10k from the end of the superbowl to the draft. I mean other than the top 5-10 which are usually easy predictions.

I prefer us targeting a RB or best the D player available, but i cant hate on Newman. That dude’s ceiling is crazy high.

Newman has all the tools to be successful, but he’s definitely a developmental project going into the NFL. The year out because the COVID-19 opt-out set him back IMO.
At this point, I would prefer Kellen Mond over Newman... Mond has a similar skill set, but I believe he is further along in his development, and is more athletic.

Hella mobile, big arm, great accuracy, kinda reminds me of McNabb. I always liked McNabb

Why shouldn't he be my favorite?
Just curious as to what you like about him. I am not a Georgia fan so do not watch him every week. However, when I have watched him, he seems easily confused if his first read is not there. I agree that his mobility is impressive. Not completely sold on accuracy (a bit hit or miss in the games I have seen).

Jamie Newman sure didn't look like a 2nd round pick in the Senior Bowl. He had a very rough game

I'm not a Newman fan at all but in his defense all those DEs who sacked him are all 2nd round quality players.

This is the best DE draft in maybe 10 years.

He also led a nice 2:00 drill TD drive to end the game. For a guy who took the year off and was rusty he played about as well as you could expect.

And we already have one of those on the roster.
That's my argument.

Why take a skillset that's already on the roster in Taysom Hill?

Now a super-accurate pocket passer like Mac Jones is another story.

No way is this guy a second round pick, especially when I see that a QB like Kyle Trask is still there to be drafted.
Looking at these Lo-Lights here I see a confused unstable QB. Tommy Stevens was a better looking prospect to me. No way.

Stick with Defensive Line, Christian Baremore, or Line Backer in the second round or Offensive Line, Jalen Mayfield.

He opted out before playing for GA btw

Just because two players are similar doesn't mean they are identical. Taysom Hill has a similar skillset to Cam Newton and Lamar Jackson but no one would say they are interchangeable. That argument makes little sense to me.

I don't know if Newman is the guy. But I do know that the Saints can draft fantastic players till the sun burns out, but until they get a top QB, they are not winning it all. Everything this team does for now on has to be focused on finding an elite QB, because until then it will be 7-9 forever.

I do not believe Taysom Hill is an NFL starter. I would be happy to be proven wrong, but I don't believe it. He's fine in close games but when you are down 17 points and have to throw every down, Hill scares no one.

As for Winston, I don't know. Off field sexual assualt issues really turn me off on Winston, but even besides that, will he ever make good enough decisions to stop turning the ball over? Tampa let him walk for nothing. They know him best, and they threw him out like an undrafted free agent.

Every draft from here on has to be about getting a QB. Everything else is a waste of time.

I ask you:

Why take so many drastic steps when you can just draft Mac Jones?

I also really like Newman. He clearly isnt ready to come in and start but 2-3 years development under Payton I think he is a franchise QB. The second is too early imo but I wouldnt be opposed to trading up in the third round a little to get him.

I dont see Newman even making it as a starter in the NFL. I highly doubt he will be a franchise QB. He looked awful at the senior bowl, and was inconsistent at Wake Forest. Do not want. Inconsistent, very inaccurate at times, struggles under pressure, makes poor decisions, and "needs a great deal of improvement as a processor."

I'd much rather see us take Kyle Trask, one of the most accurate QBs in the draft who is projected to fall to the second. He would be a perfect fit for the current offense. Mac Jones in the first would also be a good choice. There are a lot of good options at QB this year, but I hope we dont waste a pick on Jamie Newman
