Still not out here
=============

.......When eating adult cicadas, it’s advised to pull the wings and legs off to reduce the crunchiness. But Gordon advises home cooks to gather the cicadas when they’re nymphs, before their body armor hardens and while they are still soft and chewy, like soft shell crab.

He puts them in the freezer, a humane way to kill them. Once defrosted, cicadas can become a pizza topping like sundried tomatoes, or replace shrimp in any recipe. Others have followed his lead, including a University of Maryland cookbook dedicated to the cicada.......

Doing the math it looks like brood V was the last one we had here. Most I've ever seen at one time. My yard looked like someone took a 1/2" drill bit and drilled holes all through it. They were also a nightmare to drive in. Me and the kids made a game out of it and counted all the hits on the highway. We quit counting at 100. My grill was full of them and windshield was covered in guts.

Falls Church? That's just a few miles down the road from us. I haven't seen them here yet, but will be on the lookout when I walk the dog later today.

They are just starting to peak out here in Potomac MD.....

That's where I live (well Falls Church/McLean) and they are everywhere now

used to work out that way

I can hear them but just barely and haven't seen any yet

I thought that peak was mid June to mid July

Yeah I think peak is a couple of weeks after they first start emerging which was about 5 days ago around my area.

Saw a bunch climbing trees this evening. If I could figure out how to upload an .mp4 I'd post a video of them climbing. Fascinating, heh.

so... this apparently happens

About a week after the bugs emerge, signs of the fungus start to appear. The spores force the back half of the insects' bodies to fall off, Lovett said, revealing an eraser-like mass of fungus. As the cicadas continue to walk and fly, apparently oblivious to the situation, the spores fall off and infect other insects - just what the fungus is trying to provoke.

Then the cicadas spring into action as cathinone, a behavior-altering amphetamine in the fungus, takes over their brains and encourages them to ignore the fact that half their bodies are missing. That's when their sex drives rev up, and they desperately try to mate. Since their genitals are gone, their attempts at sex only serve to spread the Massospora, Lovett said.
