It looks very much like the Saints will draft at... {merged} (1 Viewer)

I hope the Saints will address as many holes as possible in free agency allowing them more freedom when draft time comes around. I know its impossible to fill every hole, but I just don't want to go into the draft with a bunch of holes and 7 picks to fill them. Be in the closest position to draft the best player available.

At #10 a top 1-2 Def positional player (DT, ILB, OLB, CB, S) will be there for the taking. FO needs to do their homework and get this one right. We need a guy who can start day one next yr and make an impact. My bet is on DT or LB. I too think a top DB can be "bought" via FA and CB is a tough piece of work to make an impact at as a rookie.

Here's what it looks like the past 10 years or so from picks 8-12. This should tell us what kind of players will be available and include a little leeway if we wanted to slightly move up or down. There are definitely some stinkers in here, but overall there were some great players drafted in this area:

Rey Maualuga (who isn't rumoured to be declaring)

I think the pick that would make the most sense would be Laurinaitis or Maualuga. Why you ask? Not because they're the best at their position, although that's true, too. Not because they play ILB, which is a bigger need than OLB, although that's true, too. But think of how much fun it would be to read the spelling variations of their names on this forum. We can't get Meachem, Kaesviharn or Payton right, just imagine the people here trying to master Laurinaitis or Maualuga. :hihi: Much more fun than if we drafted Jonathan Goff in the 2nd round.

Rey has stated, and then reconfirmed, that he is staying for his senior year.

Junior linebacker Rey Maualuga, coming off a strong performance against UCLA, reiterated that he would return for his senior season even if he has a big game in the Rose Bowl.

Maualuga and fellow junior Brian Cushing said in November that they would pass up the chance to make themselves available for the 2008 NFL draft.

"I said I was coming back," Maualuga said. "I feel confident in my decisions. Mom's happy."

I bet we pick Matt Ryan and the board explodes.

Then he eventually wins us a Superbowl.

Keep in mind that certain positions are undervalued in the first round and that players at those positions tend to go lower than they should. I am thinking of the interior offensive line, tight end, running back, inside linebacker, and safety.

The positions where players fly off the board are offensive left tackle, the defense line, linebackers who can rush the passer, and then cornerback.

Quarterback is a position where the special players go first but the others tend to fall a tad because so many first round quarterbacks have failed.

Not too shabby! Leapfrogging Cincy could be HUGE, since they have similar needs to us, especially at DT, where Sedrick Ellis could be sitting.

That's good. Just wondering where you got this from, since I've seen conflicting reports with Cincy having an easier SOS.

Switch the Niners to the Pats, which is why we probably can't get Laurinaitis.
