Rivals: Patrick Johnson's ACT score flagged (1 Viewer)

Typical slander of Louisiana's academic standards. LSU's freshman entrance requirements are actually higher than Florida's. Florida requires a 19 composite on the ACT, with a 17 in English and 19 in math. LSU requires a 22 composite with an 18 in math (going up to 19 in the Fall of 2009) and an 18 in English. Florida requires a "C" average in high school coursework. LSU requires a 3.0. Florida requires 15 academic units (4 in English; 3 in math; 3 in natural science; 3 in social science; and 2 in a foreign language). LSU requires 16.5 academic units (4 in English; 3 in math; 3 in nat. sci.; 3 in soc. sci.; 2 in foreign language; plus 1 more elective unit in math or nat. sci. and .5 units in computer science). So when a top athlete would rather go to LSU than Florida, it's not because he's dumb and we're lax in our standards. Don't accept that kind of mythology about us. Just maybe a kid thinks he has a better chance to win at LSU as well as get a quality education. That's a pretty good bet in my estimation.

I think when Patrick Johnson claimed LSU's academics was one of the reasons for picking LSU, he might have been referring to the Student-Athlete Academic facility (the Cox Building); it's supposedly one of the nicest in the country.

Some Florida fans just took offense to it on the rivals board and showed how much they don't know about LSU's entrance requirements. Actually, I think all SEC teams have the same requirements for athletes.

I don't blame any football player who doesn't choose Florida. Urban Meyer is the dirtiest coach in the SEC, IMO. His recruiting tactics are sickening.

I think the requirements for athletes to get into SEC schools are probably the same across the board, except for maybe Vandy whose may be a bit higher. The requirements for the "normal" student to get into UF are much higher than the numbers above. UF is actually really hard to get into if you are not an athlete.

Just wanted to include that's if you're from out of state. There are idiots who go to Florida from within Florida. If you get into Florida and you're not from Florida, you're probably intelligent.

I think your post is quite telling when it comes to this Patrick Johnson situation. As you posted LSU requires a 22 on the ACT. That is exactly what Johnson scored the last time he took it. The only problem is that he scored a 16 the previous two times. I took the ACT three times also and made a 28, 28, and a 29. You can't tell me something is not a little fishy when a guy jumps up 6 points on his 3rd try. Now if it was his second try I could see it because sometimes people do horribly on their initial exam because of nerves and the complexity of the test. But making the same score two times in a row then magically scoring the average to get in to LSU is a little strange. Don't get me wrong I could care less whether Patrick Johnson gets in or not, but I just thought some of you might like to know at least what the situation is.

Sorry, it is not abnormal to make 6 point jumps on the ACT. I, for example, made a 21, 22, and then a 29 on the last attempt.

The first 2 times I took it were on Saturday morning after a football game. I couldn't even hold the pencil because my hands were bruised.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but to say it is not abnormal just because it happened to you is a little shortsighted. Typically in regards to ACT scores the most, on average, improvement is 2-3 points. I'm sure there have been numerous cases of people improving their scores more than that, but in regards to the Patrick Johnson situation he scored in the mid-teens his first two times. You at least scored above a 20 initially. In any case, with a high-profile athlete such as Johnson, there are always going to be questions in the event of situation like this. What's interesting is that his last test score was achieved while he was still committed to Miami. I would think they may have had more influence in regards to his improvement than LSU if it turns out something illegal took place.

What are the U's admissions requirments? He was commited to the U when the ACT in question was taken.

What sucks, no moatter how PJ has acted over the recruiting process he is an 18 year old kid that is just trying to get into school and if this UF coach did do this, it is just messing with a kids livelihood just because he chose one of your biggest rivals. I know some of these kids lead coaches on, but there is no reason for this I don't care what the results of a test are.

I dont have a horse in this race, but what if it turns out he did do something improper to get his test score up? Everyone assumes Meyer turned him in, but that is just rumors at this point.

It's not a rumor. Florida is the school that flagged his ACT score. It's clearly sour grapes, but that doesn't mean that Florida isn't also correct and the score is improper.

Florida flagged his score before he made his commitment to LSU. According to Rivals, Urban Meyer said that because they were recruiting Johnson that they notified the NCAA Clearinghouse in case he signed with them to ensure everything was on the up and up. Now I'm not saying that is exactly how it played out, but I'm sure teams flag scores all the time for kids who have even committed to their school just so the University involved is cleared of any wrongdoing.

Most schools take a combined ACT score rather than the composite average from one test. That means they take the top score in each category. I have no clue if this is how LSU or Florida does it but it is possible to raise the combined average by 6 if he scored better in 2 of the 4 subjects.

Didnt realize it was confirmed, if they did indeed flag it before he switched his commitment I dont see what the big deal is. Even if they did it after the fact and it is sour grapes, if the kid didnt cheat nothing will come of it.

LSU does not accept the best scores on each section and combine them to get a new score. I do not know if Florida does or not.

I find these comments hard to believe considering a coach cannot comment about an individual player when he has not signed anywhere. I read rivals way more than I should, and I have not seen any comments from Meyer. The test in question was taken in October. If there was a question I believe the kid would have retaken the test way before the week he was supposed to report to LSU.
