LSU Basketball wins a championship (1 Viewer)

Well one poster in here tried to justify his opinion by claiming Reese was too close and not walking away as she did the gesture. He was fine with the gesture as long as it isn't too close and only done if you are walking away
and duration. Clark only did it for a split second

half a second - A Okay

2 seconds - disrespectful AF

As good and exciting as the game was it wasn't really that close.

I don't think Iowa got closer than 7 points in the second half

Now that was down from 21 at the half, and Iowa scored like 12 points in 2 minutes to start the third, so that made it feel like that 7 point lead could disappear in no time which made it exciting with possibility, but it's not like it was back and forth lead changes and came down to the last seconds

Or maybe waiting until you are in the lockerroom? Or alone in the bathroom stall? Maybe wait until you get home and are eating dinner with your mom....

Given that the dominant theme in this thread is now race and thus this thread has become toxic, I was inclined not to post further. It is amusing, but hardly surprising, to see that many on the Tiger Rag forum, which has a strong right-wing bent, are strongly defending Reese. For some balance, you may wish to read the Iowa forums.

I follow closely football. Had Reese done what she did in a college or professional football game, a penalty would have been called, and likely a punch would have been thrown. I did not see the prior game where Clark made the don't-see gesture. (I was out of the country for much of the tournament.) I frankly was watching on Sunday the game because (a) LSU was playing and (b) I wanted to see Caitlin Clark, whom I had not previously seen but whom I was reading much about.

Regarding a defense of what Reese did, I do not care what Caitlin Clark did in a prior game--and yes, it appears Clark, like Reese, has a reputation for trash talk. If Clark taunted in the prior game, she was wrong. And I certainly do not care what professional athletes--especially those in professional basketball--are allowed to do.

I do know that both the NFL and college football have been making a major effort to eliminate taunting.

And I know that what Angel Reese crossed the line. A point made by Iowa fans is that there is a difference between trash-talking during the game when a player is seeking a competitive advantage and gloating over a player at the end of a game. What Reese did was not a quick gesture in the first half. She made a pronounced effort with multiple gestures in the last moments of a national-championship game that was won to taunt and gloat over an opposing player. Once more, we have a combination of the stage (a national championship), the moment (the final moments), and the concerted pursuit of the opposing player to taunt. I believe that conduct is totally inappropriate and is wrong.

This is one of the most tone deaf posts I've ever read.....just totally detached from reality.....as someone said before she bullyed the bully, happens all the time in sports....but apparently folks think when Reese does it it's classless...for....reasons.....

I hope your precious line recovers.....

HOUSTON -- It is apparently news to a whole lot of people that women, women athletes in particular, are not shrinking violets.

They talk trash every bit as much as male athletes, and they’re equally adept at handling being on the receiving end of it. They don’t need their feelings spared, and they most certainly don’t need anyone inviting them to the White House so everyone feels good about themselves and no one feels left out.

These are Division I college athletes. They stopped getting excited by participation trophies years ago -- if they ever were.

“A JOKE” Angel Reese said on Twitter in response to the news First Lady Jill Biden wants to invite both national champion LSU and runner-up Iowa to the White House.

Reese is right. That’s not how this works, and LSU should not have to share its hard-earned spotlight because some people can’t wrap their heads around the fact women are not special snowflakes who can’t handle disappointment or adversity.

“I’m going to tell Joe I think Iowa should come, too, because they played such a good game," Jill Biden said Monday during an appearance in Denver.

Biden’s idea is insulting to LSU. The Tigers won their first national title in decisive fashion, and they don’t owe concessions to anyone. About anything. But it’s also insulting to Iowa, implying the Hawkeyes are such delicate flowers they need to be propped up emotionally by a visit to the White House.

What, are the President or First Lady going to pat the Hawkeyes on the head, too? Give them lollipops and tell them how hard they played?

White House visits have traditionally been one of the perks for the national champs, and the women’s runners-up – in any sport – have managed to get on with their lives just fine. Iowa will, too................

Like I said...I got no issue with someone saying that taunting in general is inappropriate or that a gesture is inappropriate.

However, when you start putting in caveats for when and how a gesture can be used for taunting? That's just idiotic

LSU won by 17 points

U Conn also won by 17 points and no one's suggesting that San Diego State go to the White House too

LSU won their first title, scored the most points ever in a title game, a game that probably had record ratings

and they get asked, would you mind sharing the White House stage with the team you just beat?

This is like when there is a black valedictorian, and then all of sudden there is a co-valedictorian

Get the fork out of here with that

and like the article said, it's just as insulting to Iowa

First of all, let me say that I am no fan of our president (I haven't been a fan of any president in a long time but I want to emphasize that political leanings aren't a part of my opinion here)....

But this sheet with Jill Biden has been blown completely out of proportion. Was it a dumb suggestion? Without a doubt but she was probably caught up in the moment.

I'm not saying people shouldn't have expressed that it was a bad idea, but the OUTRAGE about it is ridiculous.

Is the outrage overblown?

Maybe, maybe not

Had Iowa won would she have suggested that LSU go to the White House also?

Maybe, maybe not

I get the anger over it

You kind of proved my point. In order to justify the outrage, we have to assume she would have done something different in some hypothetical that can never be proven?

They were down 17 at the half, but I get the gist of what you're saying.

I guess since we are making up guidelines for what's "competitive" and what's classless to fit our opinions, aren't we supposed to add up all the times Clark did it? seems like that sounds like a good rule to make up.. lol

It's weird how a white player can talk trash/taunt and they're called gritty, cocky, gamers. A black player does it and they're called disgraceful, disgusting, thugs.

Trash talk and taunting are a part of sports, especially basketball. Anyone who has ever played the game understands that. And when a gritty, cocky, trash talking gamer like Clark loses then you better believe she's going to get the business. It's funny that Clark didn't care about it but other people are appalled and outraged.
I said in another thread that I think following a player around at the end of a game and waving your fingers in their face is lame, especially when that player had a pretty fantastic game (and arguably a better performance than yours).

I also think it is different than the normal trash talking and taunting that both Angel Reese & Caitlin Clark do during games (which I have no issue with/actually enjoy).

However, I completely agree that there has been a lot of awful/hypocritical/racist things said about Angel Reese over this.

It was not some horrible act and it wasn’t anything we’ve never seen before in sports, but some people just couldn’t wait to get off their “classless”, “ghetto”, and curse word takes.

You kind of proved my point. In order to justify the outrage, we have to assume she would have done something different in some hypothetical that can never be proven?
Yes, you're right

It's like Reese getting slammed and raked over the coals for the 'you can't see me Cena move' and we are just left to wonder hypothetically what the reaction would have been if an Iowa player had done the same thing.........oh wait

All these things are called microaggressions, dog whistles and unconscious biases for a reason

Was this racist?

Maybe yes, maybe no

Was this sexist?

Maybe yes, maybe no

And our life experience dictates whether we fall in the yes it is or no it isn't camp

Either way, there will be times we are right, and times that we are wrong
