Peterman’s familiar with the system. He has history with Saints QB coach Andrew Janocko and Carr.

Seriously, though, I get it, even if Peterman was one of the original NFL memes for being so awful as a starter.

The point of the #2 here is not to play and win games. It's to be a vet who can help manage the game from the sidelines. If Carr actually has to miss significant time, you roll with Haener.

People wanted Haener to be in a position to develop and succeed as QB2. Peterman’s the marginal vet who could ensure that happens in the competition and even helping Haener with his knowledge of the system’s concepts.

He's a backup QB not a starting QB and we need another arm for camp.

I don’t think we had plans of throwing out 4M+ guaranteed money just for a backup QB on the big names while we have a young QB on a mid round rookie salary. Peterman’s closer to vet minimum. This is reasonable cap responsibility. We could put that 4M towards a significant contributor at DL or OL who will see the field a lot.
