Could QB Trey Lance be a long term option? [update: Chargers sign Trey Lance to 1-yr deal] (1 Viewer)

Lance has potential, but would need to be treated like a rookie again. He needs real development. His NFL timeline was rough. Got picked too high to replace a guy the 49ers had been to the Super Bowl with. Got hurt and then forgotten. Probably was a bad fit for Shanaham from the start. Traded to Dallas to back up an expensive entrenched starter and didn’t get much more development there either. He needs a scheme designed for him, not one imposed on him.

The question is, where does he compare to the QBs in this draft and the QBs on the roster? What could CKM and this QB coaching staff do with his physical talents?

Shanahan's system doesn't develop QBs, it takes QBs with certain skillsets and uses those skillsets within his offense. Lance had very little game experience before he was drafted and went to a system that wasn't going to develop him. Ended up in Dallas, where he was QB3, also not being developed. He needs to go to a system where he can be deliberately developed based on his talent/strengths and skillset. He has size and an arm, those things can't be taught.

Let's be accurate on a few things.

Lance was drafted because the team saw him as a *great* fit for Shanahan's offense, that was well documented.

He was given every opportunity to be 'the guy' and got outshone by a lowly draft pick, literally the lowliest possible. The fact that the Niners went with Mr Irrelevant proves that draft status played zero part in Lance's fall from grace. It's a meritocracy in the NFL.

And the NFL has proven time and again that if you get injured, they don't hold your spot for you. When you come back, you either earn it or you don't. He didn't.

What the 49ers saw doesn't matter. Teams screw up all the time. He was given the opportunity to be the peg that fit the hole, but the 49ers had a square hole and drafted a QB that was round and they made no attempt to change the shape of the hole and the QB to suit each other. And if they were so sure of Purdy's fit, they'd have drafted him far earlier. They just got lucky that he could do the things they wanted without having to be coached.

The reality with Lance is that in 4 years he's only attempted 143 passes. In schemes that weren't designed for him. He has talent but not top 3 in the draft talent. And he needed to go to a team that had a vision to build a system around him. He didn't get that and this is where it likely ends for him in the NFL.

He got such a raw deal and it all started when the 49ers giving up all of the draft capital to take him that high. He was the rawest of the raw prospect who needed years of development. They probably had a plan and I thought another year on the bench would have done him good. Crazy thing is he wasn't playing bad when he got hurt but you just couldn't take Purdy out the picture with how the season ended. Funked up situation and I hope he can find someone that lets him develop and whatever he will be, he'll be.

Could have been worse, it could have been drafting Zach Wilson with the second pick in the same draft 🫣
But the Jets didn't give up picks to get Zach. I think the Niners gave up their first that draft (12th?) plus two other firsts and a third. 😳

All I see here is speculation and conjecture, plus an ongoing refusal to accept reported facts that disagree with your take. The facts are the facts, he failed in a system he was specifically chosen to flourish in, based on his physical traits. The Niners made a mistake and found a better option, by luck or otherwise doesn't make an iota of difference when it comes down to it.

That’s a foolish take. He had no choice in what system he was drafted into and I don’t care who thought it was the right one. Just because someone said that 4 years ago doesn’t make it true.

This much is obvious. You just keep on stating whatever comes into your mind and ignore all evidence to the contrary, you gotta do you.
You just keep pointing to something someone said 4 years ago and repeating it as though it carries any weight. It doesn’t. It means nothing.

I don't recall facts having an expiry date.

You just keep on ignoring facts that don't agree with your take on things. And handing out clown emojis in a fit of pique. You gotta do you.
