Hey everyone, how would I go about setting a letter (i.e. 'p') to a JLabel that would be placed on a JPanel later?

I am doing an assignment for class and I clueless as to how to complete it. I have to create a simple one player battleship game in java that is displayed through the console. Could someone help walk me through it. I would much appreciate it.
