3 Safety looks 2017?? (1 Viewer)

the Eagles were offering us a trade involving Malcolm Jenkins. assuming that was all true, I would think we must've have shown some interest in acquiring him. and thus the 3 safety D is in the plans for 2017...

I'm actually hoping for this. I think he deserves a shot at redemption, if he signs for cheap.

He seemed to be getting better in the latter half of last season.

So he forced a Julio Jones fumble in week 1 of 2014, and after that we had to wait about 2 and 1 /2 years for him to remotely show anything, despite being paid as a premier FS in the NFL.

I'm fine with him getting a shot at redemption somewhere....but why would it need to be here, even if the price was right?

Remember the Saints 3-safety package that revolutionized the NFL? Oh wait..,it didn't. We had one year of semisuccess, and the rest were filled with historically bad defenses of all-time. Get LBs to play the LB position...not safety. I swear that Payton has to be the only coach in NFL history that likes to build his defense from the outside in.

I get what you're saying but the three Safety set failed in New Orleans because of our personnel, not because the scheme is flawed. Byrd was injured, Bush was injured, and KV regressed.

With the proper players it can work.

When you put a 220 lb player at nickel LB...you are risking injury. The Saints went to a 3-safety base because their LBs were horrible and they were trying to get their best players on the field. I don't think it was intentional.

He hasn't even demonstrated that he's good at his primary position. Now, we're moving him to a position at even higher risk of head injuries?

I disagree, Williams has looked good at cornerback when he's been healthy enough to play. That's why I wouldn't want to move him.

Yep and this is why we see the front office bringing in tons of Linebackers this offseason. Makes sense.

We might be talking about two different things. I'm talking about a three Safety set in passing situations. Either a Big Nickel or a Nickel with KV playing OLB. I'm not talking about having a three Safety set as the base defense. But with so many teams running 11 personnel it would be used a lot.

This is how I feel. Atlanta and showed to beat the saintd. Spread them. Until we can teams are going run 3 to 5 at sets on us all the time. But I'm thinking peppers would be the pick if so

Serious question... have we cut Byrd? I saw a report a couple weeks ago that said we had informed him that we'd cut him, but I haven't seen anything that said we cut him.

If we haven't... I doubt we will. I'd like to see him come back because he really balled out last year as the season went on.

I doubt we cut him (if we haven't already cut him).

He's designated a June 1st cut:

As for the thread topic: IIRC we began running the 3 safety set to get the best players on the field which was KV, Jenkins and Bush at the time. As enticing as the formation is I don't believe it has been successful. Bringing in better LBs and CBs could spell the end of it.
