5th year option deadline for Olave/Penning is May 1st

Try to re-sign BOTH homegrown drafted talents to fair value deals, which should not break the bank for either player. Muckey is the best at doing contracts with contingencies. Do not trade Olave, do not let Penning walk, and hopefully Mickey and Khai can get those done prior to the 5th yr option deadline.

Olave at $12M/yr 4yrs
Penning $9M/yr 5yrs

Olave, it’s been great but with concussions time for someone else to take the risk. Which means Loomis will make home top 5 highest paid WR all guaranteed. But Penning Id keep. He’s rounding into form and we need to see where this goes

I agree with the thought process here.

I am afraid Olave is going to think he's worth a LOT more than the Saints (should be) willing to pay him.

I highly doubt he'd sign an extension for $3M AAV

Something to consider. I don't know what family would go on social media blaming the QB if the brother who's a WR talked positive of that QB.
You've never met my family. Not all families are like our families. I'm glad that it seems your family is not like mine and others I've known. Not everyone is as fortunate.

I would decline to offer both. If they have breakout years and want to leave in free agency for rich contracts that we don't want to match, take the compensatory picks. If they have relatively mediocre seasons, we have the leverage in negotiating new contracts.
The team and the depth don't get better doing it that way.

You take the 5th year on Olave if you don’t trade him before the deadline…this gives you at least an additional offseason to trade him

This probably what will happen IMO....I don't really think Olave has much trade value at this point....

Unfortunately it doesn't work like that.
Sometimes it does.

But I'm not suggesting he give us a hometown discount just to pay back goodwill. I'm suggesting he be smart and not chase every last cent because it's a huge risk for him to go to another team and flame out. He's not the kind of player who can just go anywhere and succeed.

It's page 4, can we talk about the money?

You look at the 2026 cap and to extend these guys is going to likely cause more restructures, and Loomis is running out of players to extend.

If he extends them, then he'll pay a small cap charge in 2026 on them, and start the ballooning of dead caps into 2027-2029. That's a big concern with Olave.

Cut or moreso trade either of these guys this summer forward after June 1 brings a $6M dead cap for Olave and $4M for Penning. If that's their thinking, then again, Loomis stockpiling some cap money may account for that.

We don't know what Loomis will do on May 1, we do not have the spreadsheet at our disposal, but I assure you these decisions are already made. Mickey often does things we do not expect.

While you may say accurately that a trade would likely not yield much if anything, certainly in Olave's case, the true plum of a trade is getting them off the 2026 books forward. That's the prize here of not extending them now, and buying time to decide, even at the risk of losing them.

You would like to see these guys have an offseason and season with the new coaching staff. If the team is a middling or worse team, but Olave is healthy, then he could be a November trade candidate.

Penning I'm not so ready to give up on. His play improved last year. We thought he was going to be an exploding dumpster fire but he settled in. Give him a new staff that coaches offense and develops players, and maybe he sticks. I would not be surprised to see them extend Penning but not Olave.
