A deeper look at the Saints offensive staff - it's so bad (1 Viewer)

FWIW, Payton reportedly tried to get him to join the Broncos staff and he chose to stay with New Orleans.

Oh yea for a few years he was the guy that followed Payton around with the cable to his headset before they went wireless I guess.

Edit we were all surprised that he did not go to Denver. But family is here in LA so makes sense

Position coaches don't garner much attention from fans when changes are made in the offseason. I remember last spring as some of these changes were made, commenting that these were significantly less successful/experienced replacements. Looking at the coaching staff roster closer...it's so bad, especially on offense.

HC - Dennis Allen: His record as a HC says it all. No need to elaborate. Grade: F-

Offense
OC - Pete: A Great Value Sean Payton. It's arguable that Payton is becoming obsolete so his Assistant to the Regional Manager lacky Pete has to be the worst OC in the league. Grade: F -
Passing Game: Curry: Maybe this dude is great. Maybe not. Hard to know. He has zero NFL experience outside the Saints. Usually young guys bounce a lot if they're in demand. Grade: Incomplete
OL - Marrone: On paper, this isn't a bad coach for this role. But Marrone is extremely abrasive and bounces around a lot. Maybe he's lost his fire and the guys are tuning him out. Whatever the case, the OL is a dumpster fire. Grade: D (maybe worse but I'm giving him a letter grade bump based on past success)
RB - Joel Thomas: Who? Honestly, know nothing about him. He's never coached outside the Saints in the NFL. Our RBs don't seem great but I mean how much does coaching contribute to that. I'd say it's more on the OL. Grade: Incomplete
WR - Kodi Burns: Another dude who has never coached offense in the NFL anywhere but here. Maybe he's good but I doubt he's close to Curtis Johnson or John Morton. Grade: Incomplete
TEs - Clancy Barone - Old dude who was out of the league after being canned by the Bears until his buddy Allen resurrected his corpse. Grade: F

I'm not bothering with the offensive "assistants."

That staff is terrible. You have Pete, Marrone and Barone and a bunch of dudes with no experience outside the Saints. So a couple of old guys and dudes who have learned from them. Great.
Outside of Marrone and with exception to Burns as this was a promotion from the college ranks to the NFL none of these assistants have been plucked from this staff to become offensive coordinators or head coaches for that matter so to me that says the league does not see value in these offensive assistants to even promote them to coordinator positions, Saints included.

Personally, I like the coaching staff on both sides of the ball, and I think DA has done an outstanding job bringing in good coaches and talented players with one exception. And I can't fault DA for sticking with Pete to this point because Pete has been successful before. But he should definitely a very short leash on Pete at this point and make a change if it's not trending in the right direction over the next couple of games.

You can talk about all of these other folks but I'll fight you over Kodi Burns. That's my Quarterback. 🥲 Turned wide receiver.

Given the rapid progression of Olave and Shaheed, getting Perry coached up to look better in preseason than his scouting profile indicated, as well as the competent preseason play he got out of some of the other young players, I like the job he’s doing with the receivers so far.

DA has done a good job reshuffling his defensive staff, he to this point will be judged on how he improves the production of his offense as the Head Coach and this may be one of those situations where he gives Carmichael the opportunity (for continuity sake) to prove he is the man for this job before replacing him this offseason if he falters, because this will be two years in a row that the offense has failed to show any consistency or creativity in getting the best out of its talent and even Kamara is questioning the play calling and offensive philosophy.

It's the HC, not the lieutenants.

No way to know enough about most of them to even draw a conclusion. I think you are simply speculating.

Well that's why I gave an incomplete to most. But isn't it concerning that so many have so little non-Saints experience and the ones who do have extensive experience are pretty bad at what they do?
