Aaron Donald says 2023 play dependent upon new contract considers retirement (1 Viewer)

Honestly, in his place I might consider retiring even if a new contract is offered.

When I was younger that thought would have never crossed my mind.

Now though I think, the man has a superbowl ring and if he has been decentley intellegent with his money he has multi generational wealth. Football is physically demanding, and the strain of maintaining his athleticism at his weight, and the general wear of being in the trenches can seriously impact long term quality of life... and then there is CTE or the risk of serious injury.

He is also reaching the age, post prime, where maintaining his level of play will take more and more work for less return. He also has 3 kids, one of them 1yr old... he can see the world live it up, find and pursue other passions.

Now competitive fire in athletes of his level, undoubtedly tens of millions to be had in another contract, and the chance to build on his legacy probably keeps him from walking away... and this is probably just "public negotioation", but I would not be shocked if he walked away and even if he was a Saint I would not begrudge him that choice.

Kid part doesn't always matter. See Brees.

This is why you don’t front load signing bonus money on long contracts. He is crying about next year’s guaranteed money after 8M signing and 5M roster pay outs. He still has 5M roster bonuses in 23 and 24.

The outcome of this, see: Julio Jones and his 2022 15.5M dead cap for Atl as why you spread/backend bonus money.
Yeah these front loaded mega deals are awesome at first. Towards the end of the deal, not so much.

I support the workers over the billionaires 99 times out of 100. Do what you need to do, Aaron Donald.
See..... I lean toward the opposite. I was taught growing up that you either live life being jealous or you do something about it 👍

I was taught that too, but the deck is stacked. You can still rise, but the odds have been fudged. Big winners, but less of them.

Money/wealth has gravity, the more you have, the more you can pull. Laws that kept money "moving", improving sovcal mobility and opportunity are gone, replaced with ones increasing that gravity.

It is really easy to fall from the middle, to lose,... but if you are at the top you can basically fall up. If you are at the bottom, talent and hard work will get you as far as a lottery ticket... for every one that claws up out of poverty, two in the middle fall and 1000 from the bottom with the same work ethic never get ahead... maybe 1 out of 10 million has the stars align and joins the top, but that estimate is probably high.

Yeah, there's no way he retires... The NFC should be so lucky! I hope he gets a short extention with HUGE guaranteed money on the backend! It's probably not happening, but I'd like the Rams to come crashing down to earth (not that they were world-beaters to begin with, despite the championship... Pshhht, couldn't even put away the 9ers in week 17...)

If I were Rams i wouldn't offer him a new contract after this season. He is bound to fall off badly after 23.
