Alontae Taylor and the importance of scouting (1 Viewer)

I’m just asking objectively why he didn’t write it until after the event if he thought it. Everyone getting butt hurt because they like his posts. He writes interesting stuff, but he clearly does it for the adoration. I thought thought it sounded a bit revisionist and self serving.
It sounded like ‘guys relax I didn’t tell anyone but I actually thought this was in play, so don’t worry’.
I have no problem with the pick itself.

I believe TCUDan is a paid contributor who is actually here to provide us with his thoughts based on his years of coaching experience.

He's certainly not here to be critiqued or accosted for doing so.

I don’t know, why didn’t you mention this in your non mock draft then. If you thought they should do this. Seems a bit self serving, to say now.
The saints obviously have drafted for need.
Given their recent successes identifying secondary players I’m optimistic this pick will pan out. I’d still like Honey Badger.
Bad night for the arm GMs who bragged about the QBs.
Ummmm….I’d be ok with it even if it is self serving. He pretty much nailed it entirely. That’s pretty dang impressive.

This strikes me as petty. Give the guy some credit. He's an actual experienced head coach who knows what he's talking about.
I think I’m pretty objective here. I don’t care either way. He just said all this after the facts. He wrote different prior to this. Then said only coz he didn’t know any players of Taylor’s perceived profile.
He could easily have wrote, Saints could use this type of player etc.
Didn’t think I would cause this much of a stir. Feelings hurt

Oh right. I didn’t the memo. If only I had his address I’d send a fruit basket to apologise

I think he clearly said he was looking for this type of player but couldn’t find him but the Saints scouts did….not sure what in the world you are talking about…..
He did alright. After the picks were made and the mock draft was posted.

I can’t win the lottery with the wrong numbers, and say actually I meant to get the right numbers but couldn’t find them.

Sure it’s probably not nice to point out this flaw but my annoying personality means sheet like this makes me comment.

Don’t worry I annoy myself at times too

I thought TCUDan said that when doing his research he DID NOT take a look at him prior to his write up, but only after the pick. And said kudos to the staff for doing their research and due diligence on him. Maybe I just read it wrong? 🤷🏻‍♂️
No, you read it exactly right. Alontae Taylor was not on my radar at all and that was kind of the point. The amount of credit due to the Saints scouting department and the importance of continuity (having DA as SP's successor keeping everything in place) was the point.

And saying "I looked at CBs who could be S tweeners" really isn't the flex that other guy thinks it is. There are always these trends in the NFL. It used to be edge rushers who were OLB/DE tweeners. The current trend is CB/S tweeners who are either 1) more athletic than pure safety prospects, 2) can play that slot corner while also giving you the size/aggression/run instincts to play first and second down in a base defense (that big nickel essentially replacing the SAM, like with CJGJ).

This was literally TCU's base defense 20 years ago, but much like the option and RPO game on offense, the adaptation lagged at the NFL level. For a number of reasons (NFL teams were still using a lot more pro style offense, with traditional fullbacks and TEs, among other things).

Point is not that I was Nostradamus, but that i briefly sought out that tweener prospect (bc these saints have been proponents of that player type for years, hence Malcolm Jenkins, CJGJ), and i didn't find him.

The scouts did. That's why they get paid. That's why continuity is important.

I don't know... Maybe I'm being clearer now. If I wanted to flex my coaching chops, I'd have prob gone in a different direction, with something new. Or done what that other guy accused me of, saying "I was gonna choose Taylor all along" when in fact he wasn't even remotely on my radar.

Great size, insane athlete, great IQ, very physical, versatile and ball skills. Terrible pick let me tell you.
Lol, u dum! 😂

He’s a very impressive looking player! Props to da Saints who did some good homework here!

I thought we’d either take a RB r S at 49. We ended up wit a big physical CB who could probably play S too! Das a big win/win for us! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

Except he did say that. He wrote before the draft that the Saints were looking for that certain type of player. You're just refusing to admit that you misunderstood what he was trying to get at and his follow up points made that clear. You're the only one making this claim. So it seems to me your objectivity is suspect and you care enough to insult him over it.

Ok went back and read the pre draft mock. He never mentioned about the Taylor type of player. Not till after the draft in this thread.

I feel I’m taking away from the post way too much. I enjoy Dan’s posts.
