Just basic negotiation. The vast majority of players that aren't superstars actually do want 18 games because it's an extra game check, increases the salary cap will likely add additional roster spots which increases the likelihood they'll extend their already short careers.

The 16 to 17 game switch was made almost effortlessly by the NFL. The NFLPA negotiated the ability to not test/penalize marijuana use in return which is a joke. It'll be a very similar situation this time. What they'll push back harder on is the amount of international games, extra bye week and required rest time in between games.

Nonetheless, the players union director makes some salient points about the insanity of having such a long season. Commish says concussions are down? Great news, then -- we can put the comical-looking helmet on him and allow defenses to tackle him again.

It's really not that long of a season. NFL is by far the shortest season of all major sports, not talking about games which is obvious, but the overall length of the schedule from September to the first week of January. People just got used to the 16 game season. Where they went wrong is not going to 18 games with an extra bye and short preseason from the jump. If rest is that important teams will adapt by sitting players for rest like all other sports do.

I hate extra meaningless football. By week 15 I have had enough of the regular season and begin wishing for playoffs.
