Backyard Chickens (1 Viewer)

They are too tough to eat after a certain age. They are only really good for soup. Not a lot of meat. After 4-5 years the egg production will drop. Then it’s a choice of pet or soup. Mine were all free range during the day and locked up at night.
Mine were locked up at night too.....we were out somewhere that evening and got home a little after dark and that's all it took. Found the roaster dead in the doorway but the hens were all safe.

Egg production in full swing now, some of the girls are laying 2 a day. From 9 chickens we can get anywhere from 7 to 10 a day now.

In addition we just planted some sunflower plants as well as pumpkins in the backyard. We also made a large 1 foot raised composting bed that the chickens love to use to forage already.

Give us updates so we can know when they started eating the plants

They have a pretty large run/coop that I built for them, and we have the back yard partitioned off with an area for them to forage and the other area that is separate from the garden/flowers. Today I worked on breaking down my daughters old trampoline to give us more room. It actually ended up making a great cover for the coop so they could have some more shade.

Chickens absolutely LOVE foraging in compost.

Got about 3/4 the way through finishing off the raised composting bed by transferring from out main compost to the new wider and longer bed. They had a field day in it.

Also I recently learned some states have laws against composting in your own backyard, so be make sure you dont have any busy body neighbors before making your own if you happen to be in one of those states. You can do a google search to see which ones.
