Video Baldy’s Breakdowns: Saints in Week 1 (Carr, Mathieu and Fuaga) (1 Viewer)

What do you mean natural position?

I take it to mean the position they played in college and people understandably assumed they would play in the NFL, one of whom that did briefly play primarily at their college position in the NFL (Penning).

What we did here with flip-flopping the two of them was very unorthodox, but it has worked.

I was watching Penning that play. Lucky there was no flag tbh.

Of the 3 stills, only the last one is what I would call egregious. I would even go so far as to call the first one ticky-tack, mainly because of his own positioning and the double team, but part of the problem is they're still photos. I have no idea if he just lost leverage/hand postion but was able to re-positioned his hands or even disengaged just after that photo was snapped. Some refs are going to give leeway for that, others are going to be very "by the book" and flag anything outside the shoulders. We all know football to some degree here so this might not need to be said but the truth of offensive line-play is that most lineman commit holding most plays. It's really the only way to block someone as big and athletic as their Defensive counterparts especially when they're fighting to keep your hands off them the whole play. It's a matter of keeping it within the chest pad rather than outside on the shoulders, effectively disguising it, and knowing when to disengage. I'd say it's the most subjective penalty that can be called on the football field with PI right behind it.

The good news is that in theory he can get much better at disguising it.

You should really watch the video. There you can see the defender turned and absolutely held.

Didn't get called and I've seen worse not called, but it's an obvious hold.

That Fuaga block downfield on #47 is unreal. Lol 47 looks tiny due to the camera angle. Like a cute lil mini player. Fuaga rag dolls him and then goes and takes out another poor guy who was just trying to live his life. It gives me the warm and fuzzies when I see one of our O linemen straight up moving 320 lbs men at the LOS. And making it looks easy. He looked like the vet going up against rookies making their NFL debut.

2nd coming of Willie Roaf? LOL Surely hope so.
Willie Roaf 6’4.5. @ 308 lbs. Roaf was just a giant man. He wasn’t just some overweight big guy. Fuaga is also a big man as well. 6’6 @ 324 Lbs.
We have a solid Oline, I don’t care what anyone says.
Trevor Penning is also a giant mann. 6’7 @ 324.
Eric McCoy 6’4 @ 314.
Ruiz 6’3 @ 306.

True, Penning held him. But it was Ruiz attempt at double-team which spun the defender resulting in Penning having to hold him.

Great stuff. I dont really know how Carr got that first pass off either. Awesome to see him able to throw an accurate pass with pressure around him.
Glad they didn't call the hold on Penning

I think we have really taken for granted how much of a slam dunk the Fuaga pick looks like. That's a building block for 10+ years at a critical position. Well done to the front office and to Fuaga himself.
What’s funny is Fuaga looked so much smaller than Brown yet treated him like a rag doll. Was this caused by the video angle?
