It's an oxymoron, people should stop saying it.

Actually from a philosophical standpoint, you can indeed "control your own destiny".

"Fate", on the other hand, you probably can not control.

Mongo not know. Mongo only pawn in game of life.

is he one of those guys that gets mad when somebody says "jumbo shrimp"? just semantics, chill dude. i thought that whole thing was just weird lol

In football, destiny = playoffs, or Super Bowl, however you want to look at it.

what is the opposite of an oxymoron..???

An oxysmartguy.

:)

And actually, that's a good term for what Costas has become. As if the 'control destiny' expression were the most egregious assault on the English language perpetrated by sportscasters.... gag me with the smarmy-see-how-smart-I-am.

I believe there is a definition of "destiny" that makes acceptable the phrase "control your own destiny." "Control your own fate" may be more troublesome in that "fate" can suggest an outcome which the actors may merit, but which they do not quite control. But "destiny" can suggest an outcome for the actor which the actor can shape or help determine.
