Bob Costas raised a good point last night: "Control your own destiny" (1 Viewer)

"He literally exploded through the defensive line"

Sports analysts and broadcasters don't think much of the english language most of the time.

No, but how cool would it be to actually see that.

It would make Rollerball look like a chess tournament in a nursing home.

Controlling your own destiny, with destiny = destination makes sense to me.

On the other hand "He plays within himself" grinds my gears a bit

It doesn't surprise me that a schmuck like Bob Costas would spend a segment of football airtime pleading his self-absorbed viewpoint that people in the media should stop using "control their own destiny." I think that the basic concept that if you win, you control your playoff status "destiny," means that you control your own darn destiny. I actually like the "control their destiny" phase. You really just hear it too much during only a couple of the weeks of the season. You know it's crunch time. They don't come any lamer than Costas, except for PantherNation.

The relationship between destiny and individual will has always been a complex one. The great epic heroes, such as Beowulf, Aneas, and Odysseus, realize that they can only achieve their destiny through courage, conviction, wit, and determination. It is not something that just happens to helpless individuals. Costas is all wet on this one.

Costas (and Olberman for that matter) have no credibility with me. Whatever they opine, the opposite is usually true.

Mongo not know. Mongo only pawn in game of life.
