The past week I have stated my opinion that we would go O-line and defense due to all the top tier WR’s going earlier than 16, and I didn’t want to trade up due to the likelihood it would cost us our 2nd or other 1st. Well I got it halfway right.
The WR’s went early and often, only 2 within the top 10 picks but then the run came. Mickey was ahead of the curve. Before the run began of trading up to #11 without using our 2nd round pick, to get a player of Olaves quality RIGHT BEFORE the WR run began was a magical GM move by Mickey. Then he is able to grab Penning at #19 to complete the day.
I was lower on Penning than most and wanted Rainmann more due to his athletic ceiling and me seeing the senior bowl highlights. But after the pick, I looked a little harder and realized that Rainmann could still have a higher ceiling, but I was selling Penning very short on his athletic profile. With Marone in the coaching tree and our track record with tackles I am just that much more confident.
With the help of Ireland and company, Loomis made a trade months in advance. Made another draft day trade, and was able to secure both positions of need with high quality players that the seemed unlikely we could land in our position, all while keeping our very important 2nd rounder. (Ireland’s importance cannot be understated but this is about Loomis)
More draft to come, and the picks still have to play. But just had to commend a brilliant performance by Loomis.
