Bryan Bresee is 2nd in NFL in sacks for DTs (1 Viewer)

Because he quite literally has been awful.

If you look at sack numbers as the sole proof otherwise idk what to tell you. His sacks have been a result of either coverage sacks or free on a stunt. (like today)

They have not come from beating his man one on one.

As a pass rusher he is having a horrible season. His pass rush win rate is 7.3 percent. That's horrible.

He's also been god awful against the run. He grades out as a bottom 10 iDL in the ENTIRE LEAGUE against the run. He is constantly dominated off the LOS and pushed back 5 yards regularly.

Do not let sack numbers deceive you.
I would agree that the sack numbers are deceiving. PFF has him ranked 89th out of 121 qualifying DT's on pass rush win rate (winning against a blocker), and 92nd out of 121 on the same stat against true pass sets (essentially drop back passes). One benefit he has had is that he has seen the 10th most drop back pass attempts among DT's, providing more opportunities to get after the QB when they are likely to be holding the ball longer.

He's only in his second year, so I wouldn't say he is a bust or anything close to that, but I agree with you that the sack numbers lack context.

Does the coaching have to do with it, I remember hearing that it seems like Allen was trying create pressure by using exotic line looks. How does those stats account for stunts and twist where 1 line man is trying free up another lineman. I would assume like the stat tracker is assuming that everyone just crash forward like high school football.

On PFF, Bresee (and other DL players) will get credit for pressures (and other traditional pass rush stats) whether they had to beat a blocker or not, but they also get tracked on how often they can win whenever they do engage with a blocker, even if it doesn't result in a pressure. Bresee had 324 total pass rush snaps, of which 295 was him rushing to beat a blocker in front of him (so 29 may have been stunts/screens/etc). Bresee only won against his blocker on 14 out of 295 snaps (4.7%).

Compare that to DeForest Buckner, who was listed as a comparison earlier in the thread (due to similar sacks, despite playing only eight games this season compared to 12 for Bresee). Buckner has had 214 pass rush snaps, and 202 where he was trying to beat his blocker to the QB. He has won 35 out of 202 snaps (17.3%). That's why Buckner is graded as one of the top DT's and Bresee is graded as one of the worst for pass rushing.

PFF has hired a lot of NFL guys over the year, and their advanced data (that the public doesn't see) is used by all NFL teams, so I tend to give them credit for having good stat tracking. The grades are probably better than they get credit for also, with most of the hate tending to be for grades in the 60's seen as an insult (when they just describe a player's performance as average NFL performance).

Bresee's pass rushing has been a bright spot, no doubt he needs to improve his run stopping.....and also no doubt that if the Saints can get a legit good NT it would help Bresee (and the entire D) immensely.....

To clarify....Think of Bresee as a good, slightly undersized effective pass rushing DT (LeRoi Glover, and no he's not at that level yet), that with a really dominant run stopper next to him (think Norman Hand, when healthy) is really, really effective, does that clear it up?

Are people really saying that? I feel like I haven't heard a peep about Bresee being bad this season on here.
He’s terrible against the run, there…I said it. Even the sack he got Sunday wasn’t impressive.

He was turned loose on a stunt.
