N/S Bucs Releasing Shaq Barrett (2 Viewers)

If he's the best run stuffer in the league he is easily worth that. But, I don't think he's the best run stuffer in the league. At this point he's an average pass rusher and a very good run stuffer. He's probably overpaid a bit for what he does on the field, unless he bounces back and has a better year next year, but part of what he is paid for is his leadership qualities. Cam is also unfortunately still the best DE on the team so they really couldn't afford to let go of what he does on the field. Although, I will say that Granderson is close to Cam and may pass him up this year, but they don't really have anyone close to those two in reserve.

In addition to being their best DE despite his decline, they could not afford to let him go because they need all the leaders they can get on this team and at this point all they really have in terms of vocal leaders are Cam, Demario, and Mathieu. And all of them are getting close to the end of their careers. It's time for younger guys to step up into leadership roles. Normally, you count on your QB for a lot of that, but I don't think Carr is that guy.

In short, the Saints don't want to cut Cam. It's why they gave him a new contract last year. So whether or not they could cut him given the cap ramifications is really a moot point.

Exactly…people are upset about Cam’s contract/production and wanting him released because he’s declining, but I don’t think the Saints are ready to kick him out, even if it WAS feasible cap-wise.

Would like to see the organization kick the tires on Patrick Queen in Baltimore

Actually was considering making a thread, specifically about Pete Werner. As much as I like him, he seems to have lost a step, maybe with all the injuries, and just isn’t the same tackling machine we saw at one point. A part of me feels like he needs to be upgraded from.

I’d be down with Queen.

I think Werner is a very good player, but he hasn't stepped up to become elite. Maybe it's in part because he hasn't stepped in the the MLB role because Demario is still playing great, but I suspect that he's always going to be very good, but not elite or a playmaker. As far as Queen, it's hard to know if he could transition to the 4-3 really a 4-2-5 and the money would be a huge risk.

I could see the Saints looking to upgrade or add a player for the future at LB, but I think it likely comes in the draft.

I think at this point he's an run stuffer with who still creates pressure but doesn't necessary always hit home or the QB runs into the other defender, because of his presence. It's crazy because when he was drafted I never thought he would be a good sack player but a run stuffer, I was wrong. There was plenty of time this year, I personally felt, that he close on many occasions. But also to your point I think Cam Jordan is getting the Brees treatment. Mickey seems to really have been rewarding home town hero's lately.
I think he was hurt most of the year and played through it.
Let's see if he bounces back this year.

Cam Jordan is paid for his legacy with this team in part but the real question is Cam played hurt last year. How healthy he will be and what that allows him to do in 2024 is yet to be determined. I will never question Cam Jordan's work effort or stature. Peyton Turner and Marcus Davenport were supposed to be the future. Let's hope Turner can sub Jordan more this year as Jordan plays his last two seasons before Canton.

Love Cam Jordan, and love what he has meant for the Saints. However, Brees at 75% made players around him better, that’s not the case with Jordan.

I was fine pushing some of those contracts into the future, when Brees was still with the team, but it’s time to stop with the crap now!
You dont think Jordan made the team better through out the years? Cam Jordan at one time was only behind JJ Watt as best all around DE I feel that definitly made the Def better through out the years. I personally think Jordan has made the team better and is getting rewarded by loomis for it. I'm not saying he's not over paid I was trying to contribute in my thoughts why he might be over paid. I personally dont care if he is or not as it is not my decision but if loomis wants throw money jordan more power to them both doesnt bother me either way.

I could be wrong but that’s not what he meant, I think. He’s not saying over his whole career he is saying last year. When drew started to decline, a 75% drew still made those around him better. This past year a 75% cam (he was injured) didn’t make those around him better. To me that’s what he was saying.

But he was still better at 75% than anything else we have. Money not matching production or statistics is irrelevant, it ain't our money, & at 75% he was still productive & better than other option we had. Which is why we worked around Baun coming in for rushing, which helped the loss of production, but Baun ain't containing the run on 1st & 2nd down.

I love Cam, BUT, that was a bad contract. Can't pay for what they've done in the past when they are older.
Got to get younger and better at the LDE position--Cam is well past his prime yet getting paid as if he is in his prime. Cant deny his heart and ability to start even when hurt. Probably a HOFer
Let him play 1 more year and try to draft his replacement in 24 draft

Projected contract for him is $18m/yr, he won't be cheap and should easily be the most expensive FA at his position.
Yeah, no doubt. He's solid, but he absolutely can and should get a nice pay day. The Saints probably could afford him, but if other teams offer an obscene amount, gotta pass.
