Rickey Jackson had 13 years with the Saints. Only missed two games in his career. HIs last season with the Saints, they went 8-8. Still wanted to play but knew New Orleans was not going to get him a Super Bowl ring. Went to the (hated) San Francisco 49ers and won a Super Bowl. Retired the following year.

I really was taken aback as a Saints fan when Rickey went to the 49ers. An NFC West division rival who all but owned the Saints franchise while in that division. Why would he go there?!? But he won a ring. That's the answer.

With regards to Cam Jordan, it would break my fandom heart but I see him playing in Minnesota next year. Don't know why, have no reasons for it but just the speculation that his father played there and I could see Cam wanting to get a ring for him and his dad. 'Course, if the Vikings have any shot at a Super Bowl, it's this year.

Well, putting aside the "feelings" involved, the one big difference is Jackson was a free agent. Jordan is not, and in fact cutting Jordan costs the Saints cap space and does not save cap space (that's true for both pre or post June 1). So Jordan himself doesn't have a direct say. That's why most assume that if Jordan is done, he will restructure his deal to help the Saints.

Now, there's obviously other factors that can come into play. Costing cap space is one thing, but actual cash flow payment is another. The organization can save millions cutting Jordan, even if the cap space is harmed. And there are other factors that could come into play if Jordan truly wants out (and a trade is an option which does facilitate a small savings if post-6/1, but would a team give up a pick, even a 7th...who knows).

It's not as simple as Jackson's path was is all I'm saying. I'm in no way predicting Jordan will be back with the Saints, but there's a lot of considerations that must be made due to the cap situation the team is in and what a new coach may or may not find valuable.

I've been expecting Cam to retire, but we'll see.
He should retire.
He has become a liability for our D. Age has caught up with him.

If he does go to another team, I don't see him getting the number of snaps that he gets with us...

And is another team willing to pick up his $12 mil salary next year in a trade? If he's cut, then another team could sign him cheaper.

I love Cam, and think he is a HOF level talent and should get in (but who knows with the moronic arsehats who make the decision).....BUT, RJ was one of the best in his position in NFL history.....had he played in NY, Dallas, SF for the bulk of his career you would have heard his name as much as LT.....

His career stats are insane, and he was equally good against the run or the pass....

Correct. A trade is unrealistic (albeit an outside option).

This likely just comes down to is Cam willing to retire or how bad does he want to force the team's hand. They could essentially tell him he would be on the roster, but inactive or extremely limited.

But again, who knows? We'll see.

I get the love of the game. The love of the city. The financial side of playing. I really don't know why he would want to put in all that it takes to play in the NFL and want to play for the Saints. The three other teams in the South have already started their rebuild. Most likely all three will be better next year than they are today. The Saints will need EVERYTHING to go right to even compete next season. Coach. Draft. Restructuring. Health. The ball always bouncing their way. The refs getting the memo wrong and they actually help the Saints.

Speaking of the contract issue I saw the other day where the Dolphins (had they been eliminated) were going to cut Calais Cambell lose to chase that ring, latch on with a playoff bound team to end this season.

I get the sentiment but that will set a dangerous precedent in the league if it starts happening, imo.

As for Jordan, it would make me sad but I’d certainly understand. Read in an Underhill article that he will play next season even if it’s not in New Orleans. His words.
