I was thinking last night about Brees's lack of arm strength and the only Superbowl QBs that I can remember with an arm like he has now were Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer.

Both had amazing defenses.

The saints had the 3rd highest scoring defense in the NFL but they gave up 130 yards rushing to the Bucs and two terrible plays by Cook sunk them in the playoffs, as well as an ill-advised passed by Brees to Thomas.

Could replacing Cook or adding another Tight end with two superior linebackers, and maybe another DT be enough to put the team over the top with Brees or is this it for you as a fan?

Loomis is supposedly "waiting on Brees" but if we're paying a guy only to play as well as Brad Johnson or Trent Dilfer is it even worth $30 million a year?

Thoughts?

I believe one more year of Drew Brees would be similar to Payton Manning's last year in Denver. Albeit, Drew would put up much better numbers than Payton did. A healthy Drew Brees can still get you 4,000 plus yards, 28 tds, and 6 picks. That would get us to the playoffs. I actually liked our gameplan against the Bucs. The turning point was the Cook fumble. Brees just can't win games by himself anymore. He needs a strong supporting cast. If our defense stays strong it's not out of the question that Brees could get us to another Superbowl. Heck, if it's all about arm strength, I've seen several qb's with cannons for arms screw up in the big game. Defense still wins superbowls.

WE have Cooks replacement. It's Taysom Hill. It's his best role and getting a young QB would mean that we do not have rotate players out for Taysom packages. Could motion a Winston or Watson to WR.

Having Hill 90% - 100% on offense really got to be the 1st move.

I really like to see the offense attacking defense in transitions as a big thing going forward with a new QB.

omg, enough, the man is done. He’s given his all and the tank is empty. Past time to move on to the future and stop hanging on to the past.

I think simply put, if Brees wants to be the QB of the Saints next season he can not have an almost $30M cap hit. The team is already strapped and will have to make some roster decisions. Do I trust him with the offense more than Jameis or Hill as of now? Definitely. But when you’re talking about losing amazing talent because he costs so much, the added veteran savvy is just not that valuable.

Seriously, why? Keeping Brees around does very little for our long term situation. We stay in the cap hole, we don't get a clear picture of who his successor is, and come up short of the ultimate goal again. It's all love but Drew is not bigger than the team.

Fret not. Drew is retiring.

I guess what I'm also asking is had the negative plays by Cooks and the block in the back penalty not happened and the Saints went on to win the Superbowl would anyone want him back for an encore?
Do we win the Superbowl? If we did, the point is mute because he would retire. Getting there is too hard, as we know from the past FOUR years. The team and my city, with all due respect, are bigger than Drew. I'm really not trying to bash Drew or deny his franchise greatness but it's time man.
