Can Saints afford to wait until later for a QB? (merged) (1 Viewer)

The "waiting until later rounds" method historically just doesn't work. It's rarely ever ever worked. If the Saints want a QB, they are going to need to draft one in round one.

What do you mean, it's rarely ever worked?

I posted the list on another thread, but this century, more teams have won SBs with FAs, backups off the bench, and QBs not selected in the 1st round than teams drafting QBs in the 1st round. By a lot. The only 2 QBs drafted within the first 10 overall to win SBs are P. Manning and Mahomes.

The best QB the Saints have ever had, he was a FA, drafted in the 2nd round.
Speaking of 2nd round, we just saw a 2nd rounder win the SB. The last time that team won, it was with the backup QB, who BTW was a FA as well.

This myth that you must get a QB in the first and sell the house to get it, I don't know where it came from. There have been what? 2 successful draft day trades involving a QB this century, one is Mahomes, the other is E. Manning.

Recently, besides: Purdy, Hurts and Dak.... when has it worked? As the point by former scouts Bucky Brooks made himself? Not centuries - recently. Which was my entire point. The QBs in the AFC that teams have to go through?

Mahomes: 10th pick overall (KC traded up)
Allen: 7th pick overall (BUF traded up)
Burrow: 1st overall
Lamar: 32nd overall
Herbert: 6th overall

Heck, even Bo Nix went 10th overall... and the Jalen Hurts example is funny because it's a perfect example of the point I'm making. The Eagles traded up to draft Carson Wentz in 2016 at #2 overall (originally was at 8) and in 2020 took Jalen Hurts 53rd when they still had Wentz (and were highly criticized for it).

The Saints have not been in the QB drafting business (within the first two rounds) since 1971. You can use the stats of the the QBs who have won SBs which is great most of the STUD QBs are drafted in round 1. The numbers back that up (about a 44% rate the last time I checked). Once you get outside of round one, that number plummets. I'm not sure what point you were making exactly?

Exactly, I don't even know how this is even a discussion at this point. Yes, you can draft a bust in the first round, but the current elite guys were all high draft picks. As much as I like Hurts, some people do not consider him elite. The same can be said about Dak and Purdy. If they choose to wait until next year, that's cool. However, we must stop being delusional about what it takes to get an elite guy that can carry a team like Drew did.

I don't see any problem taking a QB in the 1st rd. I just don't think that any QB in this draft has a top 15 grade except Ward and he's not worth trading 2 1st's and 2 2nd's for. I also think that you don't have to have a top 10 pick to find a QB that can take you to the SB

Like I said, only 2 this century, Mahomes and E. Manning.
I love Burrow. Like gang busters the 1st 2 years. 18-16 the last 2, no playoffs. Too early to tell (only 4 years).
Allen, he's very good. His playoff record not so good. He still has time (7 seasons in the league)....
Lamar: regular season MVP, playoffs afterthought. The older he gets...
Hebert: what has he done?

On the contrary. What you say makes my point.

Well, I guess you like to watch STUDS... I like to see my team win championships.

was Drew Brees the greatest franchise QB? round 2 er who was dropped for hope that a 1st was better. I don't see a true 1st round difference maker in this class. Take Dart in second although he reminds me of Levis whom the Titans had to value as a first. I believe Carr will win us enough to keep us out of the best QB draft position next year. Dont waste what we need by trying to move up in this draft, stick at 9 and take what is available. Cap wise and pick wise we are in sorry shape and keep on kicking the can. I am okay with Sanders or Dart at 9 maybe finagle a way to trade down and get Milroe later with some late round fill in picks
