Can someone explain the reasoning behind the game ending with 1 second left on the slow motion replay clock. (2 Viewers)

W/only 1 second there is NO chance to get the ball into play. Waiting for the ref to place the ball, the clock starts immediately & there's no time for a snap.

You know what an incomplete pass is right? Why would the clock run on an incomplete pass.

Anyway, the rules state there has to be 2 seconds on the clock, but what I don’t get is there is always an untimed down if there is a penalty with zeroes on the clock even if the penalty is after the clock hits all zeroes. I'm happy we got the win, but I felt after they replayed the down and 1 second was still left, I felt the Falcons had another chance. I am happy with it being in our favor, but at the same time, I'm not happy.

as I understand it, this is to account for the delay in the official starting the clock at the beginning of the play so they don’t also have to also review when he started the clock creating even more issues.
This is how I understand it as well. It's almost like how they explain when the don't throw the delay of game flag as soon as the clock hits 0:00. It's to account for the time the official to see the clock expire then look to see if the play is off or not.

The reason that it happened that was is straight from the NFL rules. The REAL reason that it happened is because we were playing the Falcons, and if there is a team that can give the Saints a REAL run for their money on how to lose in some spectacularly crushing way .....it's The Falcons.

Kudos to the NFL for letting The Falcons......Falcon.

Very dumb rule but this is one of the few times in the history of Saints football where the dumb rule benefitted New Orleans

I heard something about there has to be 2 seconds for replay to put time back on the clock. My guess is the reaction time of the ref seeing the ball hit the ground and signaling incomplete is 1 second. So when the ball, in slow motion, hit the ground with 1 second remaining, is allowed to run down to 0. Anybody have the actual reasoning?
Maybe because they ran a whole 5 seconds off on a FG right before halftime, should've been 2 seconds there so it even out.

The refs never saw the ball hit the ground. It was ruled game over by because the Saints players batted the ball around for quite awhile. Yes, the clock showed one second on replay, but in order for there to be a challenge to put time back on the clock, by rule, there had to be 2 seconds left on the clock.

You do realize the game clock is controlled by a HUMAN BEING? One that is capable of making a mistake as they did here. I'm shocked that it happened to hurt the home team, that is almost never the case.

The 2 second rule is silly, but I guess it was put in place for more egregious game clock mistakes, not one that you have to argue about a solitary second being put back.
There was no mistake made. The game clock ran out. If the network had not shown a slo mo replay, there wouldn't be any question.

Nope, never seen an incomplete pass. simple error
However, an untimed play, after 0:00 is only on a defensive penalty.

sheet, the NBA implemented tenths of a second 30 years ago but then again basically every aspect of that league is run better than the NFL.
Really? Even though the Ravens/Steelers game in the middle of the day during the middle of the week had better ratings than the NBA finals? You don’t think there are aspects that the NFL does better?
