Seeing what anybody above decent is being paid on the FA market, this is plenty reasonable. Analytic forward teams were always going to see the value in what he brings--pressure value and getting a QB off his spot or moving his feet. He could be really awesome in this new defense.

He was also generational talent when he came into the league. The talent is still there and he's young.

IF…..we just converted 9mil in dead money into real money and it’s really just 42 mil in new money…..that takes it down to 14mil/year which makes me feel a little better about it.

It seems crazy, but salaries really are just this inflated.

That amount per year isn't even that much for a DE these days. The top DE contract right now is $40 freaking million a year.

He had a bunch of void years with prorated bonus money on them on his prior contract. By extending him, only one of those years comes due, around $2.3m instead of $9m.

That said, this contract is one I thought some other team was going to give him and I'm disappointed it was us. The guy just doesn't play with consistent effort. I'm really hating this off season so far and we're only on the first day of tampering.

With that 9 mil gone he’s only gonna get 42 mil in new money which I’m assuming lowers his average to 14 mil a year. I could be wrong and would like clarification if so.

I think the fans do forget he's still very young, we signed him last year when he was 24. You can see his impact when he plays, but he has got to get coached better. I actually think some of his "plays off" have something to do with the energy he expends with his style of play. He needs to convert pressures to sacks, he needs more than one pass rush move, and he needs to learn to play more disciplined so he doesn't end up taking plays off because he's getting gassed.

I think if on 5 more plays last season he managed to connect with the QB for a sack, we would be saying this price is cheap.
