CNN: 2,000 players unify in suing NFL over head injuries (2 Viewers)

I seriously doubt that the league has insurance to cover the legal defense much less any liability that might be found. So where does the money come from?

There'll be no way to reverse course on this either. I see no way the litigious genie goes back in the bottle.

Maybe a return to leather helmets. Take away the false sense of security.

it comes from the multi-billion dollar contract that the NFL has with the tv networks every year, merchandising, etc.. i'm not saying it's right or isn't, i honestly don't know-- but i do know that if found liable, the NFL has the $$ to pay pretty much any verdict rendered and continue operating, unless it's $100 Billion or something.

It will cost the NFL money but it will be in a settlement for long-term healthcare. As far as the NFL knowing the long term risks on brain trauma, makes no sense. There wasn't a consensus by healthcare professionals on how to handle concussions until 2008,,,Zurich Consensus Statement. Until then, researchers couldn't even agree. Hell, I still have ER docs that don't know the return to play protocol. Had an ER doc tell a concussed kid last yr that he could practice in two days.

I think the issue is not that football is dangerous, but that the league withheld information from players regarding just how dangerous, robbing them of being able to make a more informed decision. It's quite possible that the players would have played anyway, but I don't think the NFL wanted to risk having players play with less intensity and more caution or to lose stars that make the league boat-loads of cash.

Remember it isn't just the concussion incidents, it's the cumulative effect of thousands and thousands of brain-sloshing hits.
