Comic Book Talk (3 Viewers)

Comic books are not just fuel for some of the biggest movies and TV shows of all time.

Aside from being a genuinely great medium that could enrich the lives of many people who haven't previously wandered down that endless rabbit hole, comics offer the chance to do things that can't be done on screen.

They represent imagination that is only limited by what a given artist can do with a pen, and what a writer can dream up.

That even extends to utterly bonkers crossovers that couldn't happen anywhere else, like "King Kong" meets "Planet of the Apes."

It turns out, the world came very close to getting a DC and "Star Wars" crossover several years back. Why didn't it happen? That's where things get frustrating.

For some historical context, writer Kurt Busiek revealed in 2017 on Twitter that he was working on a "Superman/Star Wars" crossover with the legendary artist Alex Ross before it was later tabled by the powers that be.

"Alex Ross and I were geared up to do SUPERMAN/STAR WARS, but the corporate parties involved couldn't agree on how to divvy up the money," Busiek wrote at the time.

He also shared concept art of Superman duking it out with Darth Vader (which you can get a glimpse of above), and referred to Superman/Star Wars as "a dead project."

Now the table is set. More recently at Tampa Bay Comic Convention, former DC publisher Dan DiDio recently addressed this proposed crossover (via Popverse).

The exact timing is unclear, but what we know for sure is that Marvel Comics took over the "Star Wars" license in 2015 following Disney's purchase of Lucasfilm. In any event, DiDio confirmed that this crossover made its way to his desk……..

Even so, it sounds like corporate squabbles got in the way. These crossovers can be tricky.

Each party is very concerned for their respective franchise.

If Superman beats the tar out of Darth Vader, would Lucasfilm be happy with that? Probably not.

Similarly, if Darth Vader cuts Superman's arm off with a lightsaber, with DC like that? Nope.

So this all has to be negotiated down to the letter.

That's why a Marvel/DC crossover probably won't ever happen in live-action. DiDio, speaking a bit further, explained that the creator, presumably Busiek and/or Ross, was none too happy when it all fell apart……..

It's ultimately all about $$$.

The new G.I. Joe series is quite interesting...

So I did my first fully video-recorded episode, talking to the creators of the G.I. Joe series. The first issue is out on Wednesday. Someone is probably dying...

Any idea about how long the Ultimate universe is supposed to run in Marvel? It seems to be working toward an end.
It should be set for at least a year to account for The Maker's return.

This is pretty rad. My wife's uncle is sort of a conspiracy wacko. He used to be pretty cool, but he got old and crazy. Past few years he's been living in the grandparents' house. There had long been rumors of a stash of comic books he bought as a kid and kept around. A few years ago, while we were staying in the grandparents' house, I saw the boxes. I opened one and just on the top were Thor and Dr. Strange from the 1960s. Ever since I got that taste I've wanted to look through those boxes.

Fast forward a few years. He's in the ICU. (Not the rad part). He told his sister (wife's mom) to take the boxes out of the house to keep other crazy siblings from taking them and selling them. Yada yada, they brought me one box (of 5) to look through and inventory. I imagine the rest will be forthcoming.

Sweet sassy molassy. This is one box. Over 200 comics from 60s and 70s. I've been through half the box. Mostly what you'd imagine (fair condition, low value), but a few gems like these.

Now the only problem is what to do with this erection. It's been over 4 hours and I'm starting to worry.

Here are a few of the standouts I pulled from this box.

4 more boxes after this (2 are apparently larger boxes). Based on his buying patterns I'm certain I'm gonna find a Hulk #181 in one of these boxes. Don't know what condition it will be in. He didn't take care of these. They weren't in sleeves and the bottom of the box was all gritty with mouse turds in it. If he had taken care of these, I'll bet he could have retired on them. But I guess if he took care of them, he'd have sold them by now and taken better care of himself and I wouldn't be looking through them today. So, yay?

Some of those look in decent condition. My very first comic book was Wonder Woman #1 given to me by my uncle when I was a kid. It is tattered as fork, but it is graded, secured in safe deposit box, with my granddaughter already plotting to take out her baby brother if he were to ever get close to it. Even if some of those titles fetch you $50 a pop (looking at that Namor #1 and Iron Man #1), they add up.

However, if there's one thing I will advise above all else if you plan on keeping everything.

GET forkING COLLECTIBLES INSURANCE!!!

That was a life-saver for the stuff I lost in Katrina.

(Also, if somehow there are any Batmans in there, holler at your boy...)

Your wife's relative appears to definitely be a Marvel fan.
