Ok I have a base salary that I get, but I also get commissions whenever I sell a Protection Plan(like a warranty only better) or a Tech Service at work. However lately, say within the last 5 months I keep getting screwed. I'll give a customer my card, and they'll come back when I'm not there and someone else'll get my commission. Like one time I was selling a Notebook to a guy and his father. Had em convinced on the plan and service. Gave em my card, they ended up coming back after I left and handing my card to the associate in Tech. Only thing is she only saw my first name, which is Bryan. Problem with that is we have myself and two other Brians at Office Depot. So she thought it was the Assistant Manager Brian, so she calls him over and her gets my $199 plan and $99 tech service. When I told him about it, he said he'd change it and give me credit. He never did though. The other day I was telling a customer what days I was gonna be there. When I mentioned not to come Wednesday because I wouldn't be there, he looked at me like I was nuts. I told him later that the only time I can make sure I get my commissions is when I'm there. I mean am I wrong for that?

Take it up with management. Leave the customer out of it. It sounds desperate. WHen you talk to your manager, be sure to lay it all out on the table and get things resolved. I would have taken this up with the boss long ago.

Well thing is we work as a team. So all the Store Manager tells me is to be sure they have my card and tell them to bring it back in, and if they forget then I obviously didn't do my job as a salesman. Which is total BS. I once talked to a customer for 40 minutes laying out the Plan and service. She said she'd be back the next day. Ended up coming in the morning before I got there, didn't bring my card Tech associate on duty got my commission.

Have you collected on anyone elses commission? Payback. I would talk to your manager and ask him for any suggestions. Because he's probably the one who snags the most. HOw does you other co-workers feel about this happening to them?

Actually I have too many times. Times I shouldn't have. I stopped doing it though.

If you want customers to come when you're there then be subtle about it. Never tell the customer when to come, they don't care who gets the commission. They will come when it is most convenient for them.

If a customer doesn't bring your card in then that's just tough luck. That's the way it works. Best you can do is emphasize the importance of bringing the card back in when they decide to make the purchase. I'd even make up a story about how your performance is ranked by turning in that card.

In the situation of the specific example you gave. You need to stay on his *** about it or go to the manager. If everyone involves openly admits it was a mistake then it should be corrected.

Other than that, this is sales and commissions. Your team members will lie, take your card and throw it away and cut your throat to get the commission.

They need a policy change. Big time@! Management probably making a killing. Just quit,.

They do, but only about one thing. See the way it works is, we gotta sell as a team and if we sell a certain amount we can get up to 20% commission. Meaning if I sell $5000 worth of plans and services in a month and we hit that 20%, I'll get 20% of $5000 on my check. Now on the flip side of that I can sell $5000 in plans and services but if we fail to hit the goal as a team. I get no commission at all. That I think should change. I sell between $1200 and $2000 every week. Every once and again another associate will hit $900. I haven't been caught but maybe one time in the last two years. I'd like the way the commissions are done to be changed.

Can you give extra discounts or any freebies on your own? If so use those to get them to ask for you.

You should try your hardest to sell the plans at the time of the initial purchase.

Oh I do, but sometimes the customer isn't getting paid till the next day or wants to do more research instead of making an impluse buy. I'm good with that, because I've had plans returned because they were made on an impluse.

I heard selling those Kirby Vacuum Cleaners was a scam. You should quit. The 20% of the $5000 sounds like an unachievable goal. I dont like it. I smell something

Well we hit 15% last month and I sold over $5000. My check was for over $1100. My normal check is a touch over $600

Ill be honest, if I ever heard an employee telling a customer to come back at a certain time, so he can get a commission, Id ask the employee to leave, and not come back. Hell, make up an excuse about how you can process things faster since youve already dealt with him. Make it about how its better for the customer, because frankly they owe you no favors.

The thing is, if you are all selling "as a team" and its not just you making all the sales, you should get as many "unearned" commissions as you lose due to people forgetting cards when they return. Simple stats say that they are no more likely to forget your card, then someone elses unless the other people are doing something better then you to remind the customer to bring it.

Yes you will miss some, yes you will get some -- in the end everything should come out in the wash, especially if you have good relationships with your fellow sales managers or atleast know them well. Know which ones have your back, get theirs, and the ones that will screw you, screw back.

If thats not the case, it is worth looking for new jobs -- probably not in sales.
