Does anyone know when they are awarded and if the Saints will get any?

I can almost guarantee you we will not get a pick. The first hurdle is if we signed more free agents than we lost and with our injuries last year, we did.
End of story. Google Adamjt13, he does a projection each year in late March and is usually pretty on. If he says we will get none, then book it.

I would think we would get one for Jeff Faine. He signed a pretty huge deal with TB and I know that has a lot to do with it.

EDIT
And the UFA signing period ends at the end of July. That is the period they use for comp picks, so our injuries during the season would not affect it.

We aren't getting any comp picks.

We lost Faine but we signed several other players.

I would think we would get one for Jeff Faine.

Faine is canceled out by the addition of the other free agents we signed, and the value of their contracts, etc. There's virtually no chance we get a pick.

Faine becoming the highest paid center of all-time will play a role in us getting something.

we will get a very good one from the Faine signing by tampa , he started and was signed for big money.

It doesn't work that way.

Although the exact system is kept secret we do know that FA's are placed into 3 pools. McCray would probably be a B pool guy. Faine an A just for the sake of arguement. Meanwhile Randall Gay would also be a B pool guy.

This all likely cancels out any shot at a pick.

In addition to the 32 picks in each round, there are a total of 32 picks awarded at the ends of Rounds 3 through 7. These picks, known as "compensatory picks," are awarded to teams that have lost more qualifying free agents than they gained the previous year in free agency. Teams that gain and lose the same number of players but lose higher-valued players than they gain also can be awarded a pick, but only in the seventh round, after the other compensatory picks. Compensatory picks cannot be traded, and the placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player's salary, playing time, and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor. So, for example, a team that lost a linebacker who signed for $2.5 million per year in free agency might get a sixth-round compensatory pick, while a team that lost a wide receiver who signed for $5 million per year might receive a fourth-round pick. If fewer than 32 such picks are awarded, the remaining picks are awarded in the order in which teams would pick in a hypothetical eighth round of the draft (These are known as "supplemental compensatory selections").
Compensatory picks are awarded each year at the NFL annual meeting which is held at the end of March; typically, about three or four weeks before the draft.

So if we get anything it will only be a 7th rounder, as stated in an above post we signed a boatload of FA due to injuries.

Again, just to point out the extreme unlikelihood of getting even a 7th round pick, this statement is key (from the best projection guy there is, as mentioned above)/

No team has been awarded a comp pick after signing more qualifying free agents than it lost, no matter how significant the difference in combined value.
Last year we signed more than we lost. So again, it is extremely unlikely that the Saints will receive a pick. Stranger things have happened, but don't hold your breath too long.

The term "qualifying free agent" is unknown but I would imagine that players who retire or were cut or signed from the street would not qualify. If that is the case then we have this list...

Randall Gay from New England $1,762,500
Leigh Torrence from Washington $451,720
Terrence Holt from Chicago $485,000
Total $11,406,368

From that list we signed 5 more than we lost. The salaries are about even.

Which of those are "value" signings and which are not is pure speculation but it appears to me as though there will be no compensatory picks for the Saints.

I do believe that there is a chance that we may get a pick in exchange for Faine because Tampa paid him so much and our highest paid free agent signing was less than half of that but I'm not 100% sure of how it works. Nobody really is outside of the NFL but Adamjt13 is about as good as it gets.

If we take a cue from last year's projections by Adamjt13 and say that players who make less than $750,000 then we can adjust the list to this...

Lost
Jeff Faine to Tampa Bay $7,000,000
Olindo Mare to Seattle $1,625,000
Terrance Copper to Baltimore $1,193,750
Jamie Martin to San Francisco $830,000
Total $ 10,648,750

Signed
Mark Brunell from Washington $1,795,000
Bobby McCray from Jacksonville $3,300,000
Randall Gay from New England $1,762,500

Total $6,857,500

If these adjustments are correct then we may have one or two picks but I really don't know for sure. I'll leave the real predictions up to Adamtj13.

I'd say that we don't get any considerations for Jamie Martin (I don't think that he played) and that we may, at best, get a sixth rounder for Faine because McCray partially offsets his loss. Just my guess and is based, partially, on Adamtj13's stuff from last year. The fact that Brunell didn't play for us may help offset the Martin thing and give us a seventh but I wouldn't count on it.

I think there is a secret variable in the compensatory pick system that states New Orleans will never get a pick earlier than the 6th round and will be very lucky to get that. It seems like every offseason we hope for one of these picks, see other teams get them in high rounds, and we never get crap.

If fewer than 32 such picks are awarded, the remaining picks are awarded in the order in which teams would pick in a hypothetical eighth round of the draft (These are known as "supplemental compensatory selections").

This incidentally, is how we obtained the 7th round compensatory pick in 2006 which we used to select Marques Colston.......
