Corey White video (1 Viewer)

I'm really high on this kid.

There were some positives, and yes a lot of negatives. Here are a few takeaways from the film...

He gets beat deep. A lot of that seemed to be blown coverage by the safeties. Both, Jenkins and Harper, play for the big hit. Their first instinct is to step forward. The problem with this is quick receivers will outrun your corner while you are still frozen. If the play is a short pass or a run, our safeties miss a lot of tackles because they try to lay the wood, rather than just wrap them up. Regardless, White got beat deep way too much; but I don't think it's anything that can't be fixed.

He bites too hard on double moves. I think a lot of this comes from being young and just wanting to make an impact play. With Greer being hurt, White had a premature opportunity to step up and make it happen. He just needs to let the nerves settle and read before he reacts. When he does, we'll see more plays like the INT and batted pass vs ATL.

He seems really good at coming up and tackling. Out of all the footage, I only counted 5 missed tackles. 3 of which were screens designed to make the first guy miss (he also busted a few of these and made some tackles in the backfield). Other than that, he wraps up and tries to prevent YAC. If he can't get there, he tries to force the runner to the sideline. None of his missed tackles went for huge gains.

He didn't record a sack, but he did create quick pressure. Especially in the game vs SD. I'd like to see us send him off the edge more.

He seemed decent at getting off blocks. Decent is all you can really ask for, from your corners.

With all that bring said, I don't think his rookie season was as horrid as people are making it out to be. It's hard to judge, but I don't think it was awful. Even our veterans said that Spags was a poor communicator; and it shows in the film. No one seemed to know where they were. Our guys were bumping into each other and jumping on routs that were out of their zones. I'm excited to see how White plays in a system that focuses on tighter coverage and being more aggressive. This seems more if his style of play. He has what it takes, I just hope he's coachable.

I definitely want him on the roster competing for a spot. He was a rookie on worst defense in history. He almost deserves another rookie year for that.

After a few plays all I started paying attention to was the lack of pass rush. Will smith's little shoulder move in the redskins game (first vid) should get him fired for sure.

He can't play man to man he will look poor. Jonny pat look bad only because he and Greer and pat Rob do not know how to play zone. White will struggle in the new man defense.

It's hard to assess anything, he looks bad in both man and zone but to pin it to talent and physical ability is hard for me to say. There is that hesitation in man and in zone, so in general and in every sense of the word he was in over his head. I think that at best he is a bigger potentially more physical version of Randall Gay., but that's IF he can get his head in the game. Gay turned out to have a great career at nickel.

He has good reactionary skills, he just needs some development on a functional defense. Hopefully we can get that together this year.

Corey white isn't a safety. Jeeesh. For a young rookie being thrown into the fire he made marked and steady improvement. He has the ability to be a stand out press CB with excellent movement skills. He will be a leader of our CBs for years to come.

Thank you.

He was a cb/ss in college that ran a 4.55 and went in the 5th round for a reason.

I haven't been sold on him, however after watching the clips I noticed a lot more upside than I previously thought.

Let's all remember how bad our defensive playcalling was. We saw it in the clips by how many times the Safeties were brought up. How can you expect a rookie CB playing nickle to never need Safety help over the top??

I do think White needs to stop watching the QB and just play his man, when the situation calls for it. While he needs some work playing the zone, there is not one DB on the team we can say does not need it.

Also think about this..1st year, new defensive scheme, new defensive coach, no head coach, and a college SS....
I'll give him the benefit of the doubt

With some of those defensive calls I can why he was getting beat. No LBer help in middle and no safety help on most of those. I think he could be a good db.

This is every throw or play by White I could find... the good the bad and ugly.

I think Corey White has a ton of game. You have to take the good with the bad, when assessing ROOKIES. He's got pretty good instincts, recovery speed, he needs to clean up his tackling, but the kid can put it on people. What really stuck out to me was the total lack of pressure by our line. Our guys were getting washed by, and the QBs were just sliding to a side, or stepping up into clean throwing lanes. If anything, these videos proved that our pass rush, compromised our coverage. A lot of those completions came when receivers freelanced, and shook themselves open cause the rush never got there.

I know we knock Harper, Jenkins and the rest of our DBs, but theres your proof right there in those vids. The WRs are covered, but because the QBs were able to reset and keep their eyes down field, they completed passes when the plays broke down. Yes, it was part Spags D, and yes, our secondary couldve played better, but I believe the catalyst to all our defensive woes, fall on the shoulders of the front 7. If we had the 9ers front, I think our DBs would be just as good, if not better than theirs. I mean look what happened to them when they couldnt get to Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco. They barely won to get to the Super Bowl, then their DBs got circumcised by Joe cool in the big game. It all starts up front, and I think we have talent back there in the secondary. Its just, you can only cover guys for so long before the open up.

I like White, he got abused more than he held his own in the first half of the season but as the season went on he got better. He is one of the few players that showed progression on defense last year. He earned a shot to come to camp next season with a chance to make the team, really not much more and nothing less. I have high hopes because he made a huge transition into a horrible situation and improved during the season.

If you want to really see something aweful, use the same clips to focus on Malcolm Jenkins and Will Smith.

So how will CW fit into RRs scheme? Though a CB at Samford, at 6'0 and 206, but a 4.55 in the combine, most had CW projected at SS. (BTW, White later ran a 4.39 at his pro day)

IMO, in White, Spags saw a Cover 2, zone CB. Despite comin from a small school, and being so raw, Spags put him out on the field, to sink or swim. And early on, White sunk. But Spags stuck with White. I think its because Corey showed him some good things: athletic ability, a willingness to learn, a "short term memory" (Get beat, so what? Dont dwell on it, get back up!) and a bit of an "attitude", maybe even a "swagger" to play the position. These are the kind of qualities a good NFL CB possesses.

Now its a new DC, scheme, and coverage. Can Corey White play man coverage? I dunno. Can he move to S? I dunno. What Corey White DID do was show he CAN play in the NFL,............

and he'd probably be the FIRST one to tell you that!

He can play man. The plays he made were in tight coverage. The bad plays came from getting lost in the zone. I don't like using buzz words like "shut down" or "will thrive." But I DO think that White has the best shot if being our next premier corner.
