Could the Saints use a player like Tavon Austin? (1 Viewer)

I keep thinking Payton will go for a dynamic return/receiver/jet sweep guy like Austin or Tyreek Hill in the draft.

I didn't realize Austin had 21 fumbles. I rather have John Brown from Arizona.

Underhill said the Saints divide up their prospects into three groups: wants, needs, and must-haves. I don't think Tavon Austin fits even the "want' category. Ted Ginn Jr. fits the slot receiver role fine, and I would not want to see the Saints continuing to go after smallish receivers. For too many of these guys (in contrast to Ginn) the speed advantage is diminished by the way smallish receivers just get crunched. Brandin Cooks in the Super Bowl is the latest example.

If Austin's agent is any good, he'll get Tavon a better and another "potential" contract with a team that has gobs of cap money.

Ginn is not a slot receiver.

As far as Tavon Austin, I do recall that Payton liked him coming out of college, but I'm not sure if what he has seen in the NFL has soured him on Austin. But, I have total trust in Payton when evaluating WRs. If he sees a role for him in this offense then I'm fine with it.

How many players have we seen that were awesome in college, but non factors in the pros? Tavon Austin is just another example of such a player.

He's too small for the pros, and those 21 fumbles prove it. That is an incredible number of fumbles in 5 years, especially since he only gained 500yds once in all that time. That's a lot of risk for very little reward. Turnovers cost you games, forget about his lack of production, it's all about his 21 fumbles. Just NO.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly.

I loved him coming out of college. One of the quickest players I have seen. Saying that it never happened for him though. Bad awareness in routes. Struggles to beat press,,

I think he'll stay with the Rams, his $5 mil roster bonus is already guaranteed. After this year he's definitely gone.

Whoever mentioned his agent, I'd say his agent has done pretty well for his client. He'll be at over $40 million in career earnings after this year and his on field production has warranted about 1/10 of that.

Because you'll be asking him to play a role that has a higher risk of injury it would make sense for it to be a cheaper talent. Paying for Austin and him not having a significant role in the offense wouldn't be very smart.

His ceiling as a WR has been maximized, at least if you took a rookie with a lower floor but a ceiling that could work towards being a contributor you aren't paying millions for him just to return punts.

Just makes more sense to draft for that role.

And another thing, we are heavy in picks in the late rounds of the draft. I am sure we'll use some to jump in front for a player we like (as we always do).

Late picks are also perfect for special teams players, that with some work and experience, can become role players at both our offense and defense.

Exactly, plus theres a good chance they'll bring back Snead along with Austin Carr so if you can't upgrade the position with a top tier talent, you upgrade the position by bringing in competition and then having the creme rise to the top. Toss in another low round player that can compete with Lewis as far as return duties and then if he show's hes qualified to compete for slot duties you allow that to happen.
