Davenport article (1 Viewer)

Some ppl think we gave up too much to get him but IMO Davenport was 1 of the safest picks in the draft. The guy has elite speed (for his position), elite length, above average strength & it seems that his head is screwed on tight. He has enough maturity to realize that he can't live off of his college success & has humbled himself to get even better. What more can u ask for from a 1st rounder? The boy is gonna be a problem ?

I’ve been lurking on this site for 10+ years and this comment made me come off the sidelines. Marcus Davenport does not just have above average strength. If you’ve watched any of his film he’s got uncanny, natural, grown man strength and he looks like a man among boys when he engages (and I’m including the senior bowl too against better competition).

There's a lot of buzz, so all eyes will be on Davenport when camp opens up. I hope his thumb is well enough to play so he doesn't lose reps. Surely it will be ready for the preseason games. He may have to wear a padded glove, but he can still get quality practice. For me, he's the most exciting defensive player in a long time, since Lattimore. ;) But really, he's has the most potential of any pass rusher we've drafted in years.

Great potential but it’s ultimately going to come down to how much he wants this. Is he going to put in the work to learn technique and keep his body healthy? You never really know until it happens.

Welcome out from the darkness, friend.

The first part speaks to character issues of which by all accounts this kid appears not to have.

It’s not always character issues though. It’s work ethic and grit...not just at work, but when you’re not at work. It’s what separates Cameron Jordan from the significant majority of other DEs...dude wants it.

Yep exactly. Davenport has it all except elite change of direction(not as important at DE), and play recognition skills. Possibly a pass rush plan but he may have that by the start of the season judging by how quickly he learned and adapted at the senior bowl.

Just sayin he's in the pros now. Hopefully his grown man strength @ TX SA translates well for us sooner than later. Honored to get ur attention

Haha it was about time I think. Yeah I agree. I just had to say something because the first thing that strikes you when you watch his film is the guy looks like Mean Joe Greene out there. And when Cam Jordan was drafted I said he reminded me of Reggie White. So we’ve got Meane Joe Greene on one side and Reggie White on the other

I just hope he can handle the pressure put on him. He has to be good when you give up that much for a player. He will have a ton of pressure on him from day one. He has the talent for sure. I hope he wants to be great and not just good. Some guys are just good to be starters in the league and don’t put in the work to be the best they can be out there. He seems to be mature beyond his years. I hope the pressure pushes him to be the best!!

The only thing with Davenport is I don’t see an NFL body yet. He has all the physical gifts you could ever want. I’ve never heard of any questions about character. Stepping into a team with Jordan and all will provide a strong framework to be a pro. I think he, like any young guy, will take a bit of time to develop into an every down starter until his strength and physical maturity come in. However, as a sack guy/situational rusher this year, I’ll be surprised if he’s not pushing double digits cleaning up what Jordan and Rankins can’t get. He doesn’t have to be great this year, just has to take out the trash that gets flushed to hi side, and make sure the QBs can’t continually float to his side to get away from Jordan’s pressure.

I'm hoping for at least 7ish sacks on the year. That should be enough to keep everyone optimistic haha
