Death and Facebook (1 Viewer)

For those that don't know, HammernNails (Alex), passed away yesterday. Anyway, reading that thread http://www.saintsreport.com/forums/showthread.php?t=160492

Made me think of this one and caused me to look up some of his old posts and threads. Some very good thoughts in here

yeah, this thread is about Facebook, but a lot of the same things could be said about websites where people interact on a daily basis like SR.

So sad about Alex, seemed like such a terrific guy.

I think there is the same connection to be made, but the difference is very interesting also...

Online friendships, etc... We are a community where some of us get to hang out and do things in "real life" but we also have those who create bonds in a strictly "virtual" world. And even if we know someone in a "virtual" world, the "real life" person is who we mourn in loss.

Wow - that's horrible news. He was certainly full of live and a very giving person (and I never even met him, just shows how well we can get to know each other here).

RIP Alex.

You're totally right. SR is different in many ways that FB, but I think the community here is closer in a way. FB really only facilitates relationships that you already have. Online communities like this one allows you to make new relationships.

There are many of you on here that I feel like I totally know and value - and would be very affected if something happened.

Sorry to hear that Chuck.

I had a similar situation when my friend took his life a week after I had helped him set up his facebook account. Luckily I knew his password and accepted his friend invitations so that everyone could post something about him on his wall. It is kind of scary to see him in my FB friends every now and then but kind of humbling as well and reminds me not to take life for granted and to enjoy friends while we can.

Couldn't have said it better myself Chuck. I have only met a few handfuls of people from here, but I consider many of them great friends.

I feel the same way regarding many many people on the site that I haven't had the privilege to meet in person, but I feel like they're family.

I agree that SR differs from FB in that regard for sure.
