In defense of the bystanders, we don't know everyone's personal circumstances either. Someone may appear to be able-bodied enough to help but could be dealing with a variety of health/personal issues that dissuade them from assisting. They could have a family member/friend that they don't want to leave unattended, even momentarily.
Also, what happens if I help and injure myself helping? What redress do I have for that? Personally, I would help but, to me, sole blame falls on the airline and its crew for this. Part of your fare is an assurance that the entity ferries you safely and responsibly onto and off of the vessel. We can be selfish and cowardly as a community, I agree, but in this situation the airline put all passengers in a bad spot and just straight up failed this couple. It's disheartening.
