N/S Divisions that would make sense for fan travel… (1 Viewer)

How does that make sense for fan travel? Maybe the driving fan?
Divisions consist of 4 teams, and playing road games against your division opponents count for only 3 games.

This is my biggest beef with the whole geography-based concept as it relates to the NFL. Why does the league (and many fans) act like where the team travels for a mere three division games, one or two of them likely already close by in the old alignment, is such a big deal?

This isn’t the NBA or MLB where you’re having several contests sprinkled into the schedule on the road against your divisional opponents each year.

Maybe it would create more rivals. But I dunno, do rivalries develop and are more prominent when cities are closer together. Maybe, probably so

Lol How about we do the opposite. Like put Seattle Houston Miami, and a New York team in the same division.

You joke, but Atlanta, Carolina, New Orleans, Los Angeles, and San Francisco was 🔥. A healthy mix of regional and cross-country quirkiness.

You’re right, but Did we have Carolina back then? I don’t remember them but I’m old and forget shess all the time lol.

But back then our rivalry with San Francisco was as strong as any, so maybe geography doesn’t make a difference. I mean, God, we hated them.

But you couldn’t help but love Joe, Montana. At least after he was gone.

Also back then. San Francisco was a great place to visit.

The NFC West was often a four-team division with New Orleans, San Francisco, Atlanta, and the LA Rams. Carolina was assigned as the fifth in 1995.

As a thought experiment sure, but given the timing teams were originally created, the merger of the AFL and NFL, and the NFL wanting Florida, Texas, and California to have a mix of NFC and AFC teams from a financial and rooting interest none of that makes sense. (i.e. if I live in Florida I don't really have to root against the Jags or Bucs as a Dolphins fan because none are in my division.)
