Since reports are that Brees does not want to be franchised?

Well, Brees might not like it, but if we don't re-sign him, we have little choice. He's the number 1 priority. No disrepect to Carl, but he is an extremely distant 2nd.

Brees may not want to be franchised, but we can't risk losing him, so if we can't come to terms with him, we'll have to franchise Brees. I just hope that Loomis is sharing with Brees the amounts that he thinks we'll have to pay each of our key free agents, in order to have Brees temper his salary demands so we can afford to keep our key free agents. If not, then I think there is a good chance that we'll lose Nicks, and it'll be much harder to maintain success.

If Brees is signed, then im going to assume Nicks gets the tag.

Signing Brees and franchising Nicks would be win/win

Do we Franchise Nicks?
We may not be able to. We have to get the Brees contract done first.

Have to think Brees wants Nicks as much if not more than anyone else
That's his protection

Franchise tag or not, I think the real question is "Are we going to be able to keep Nicks?". He's going to command the same contract Evans got. Can we afford the most expensive OG tandem (by far) in NFL history?

I hope so and I think it's possible because we don't pay the rest of the guys that much but it's not a given.

Im not worried about Brees. Its why I made this thread. Brees will be locked up long term regardless. I am however worried about losing Nicks. Him and Evans form the best guard tandem in the NFL and i'd HATE to break them up.

Tired of all this contract and franchise stuff. Heck we gt a very important gme coming up Monday. Save that fr after the season people. Im like wow....Really!!

At some point $ becomes a factor. I too would hate to loose Nicks but how does it work in the cap. Loomis is a genius and will get something done.

Right now I am sure he is figuring out how to work the money to win another superbowl (our 3rd):hihi:

I think what Brees said is he won't sign the contract that comes with the franchise tag. He can't stop the Saints from placing the tag on him, but he doesn't have to sign the offer that comes with the tag. That's what I understood from that story.

Plus Loomis would be ran out of town if he didn't place the tag on Bree's and placed it on Nick's instead!!!

Problem is the franchise tag is calculated on all offensive lineman, not split into OG. Last year the OL tag number was $10,731,000, and will likely only rise as the likes of Jake Long's and Joe Thomas's contracts rise in value

we have a transition tag also that would give us the right to refusal of any contracts that are offered Nicks. That is what will most likely be used on him. It works like restricted free agency except there is no compensation if we refuse to match - and we can't use it again until the next year. If we agree then Nicks would sign with the Saints for the same terms offered by the other team.

As for the franchise tag, Drew is saying he does not want to just play next year out under a 1 year contract. We would still keep rights to him if he does not sign it. It would work kind of like the transition tag at that point I think.

I hope so.

Here is what I am hoping, we sign Drew Brees long term and use the tag on Nicks. The Salary Cap will increase drastically in 2013 when the new TV deals kick in, and we should be able to take care of Nicks then.
