Do we franchise tag Nicks in this off season? (1 Viewer)

Nicks being back is just as important as Brees. Pretty sure the FO and coaching staff understands this as well.

Just wanted to bring a little perspective to the Brees situation as a RE Agent. Now I'm not pretending sports agents and RE agents are the same, but the basic relation is, the fact you have a person that is negotiating for your fiduciary interests for a percentage of what they negotiate. Brees has one of the top sports agents who is trying to get him top dollar.

Now when I am going to bat for a buyer, even if my buyer is so in love with the property they would even pay full price, my job is to get them the best price. When negotiating, not only would I not let the other side know how interested my buyer is, I would do opposite and tell them how many other properties are in play and I think this might be best fit for them if we can make the numbers a lot more attractive, etc etc.

Bottom line, the fact a contract hasn't been signed is almost certainly nothing to do with Brees, but his agent trying to get the best deal. On the other side, Saints have other key guys such as Nicks and Colston they need to sign back and make sure to structure everything to remain under team salary cap. This no doubt is really tricky and might take a contract where there is a sizable amount of money towards the end of contract. Regardless, Brees has clearly stated New Orleans is his home and the Saints don't want to lose Brees, so they will definitely get it done after he wins his second Superbowl in a few months.

Have to think the SB being in NOLA holds the key
Can't force someone to help us get to the SB we will host
Need to get these guys signed & signed early
Look for many to return

we have a transition tag also that would give us the right to refusal of any contracts that are offered Nicks. That is what will most likely be used on him. It works like restricted free agency except there is no compensation if we refuse to match - and we can't use it again until the next year. If we agree then Nicks would sign with the Saints for the same terms offered by the other team.

As for the franchise tag, Drew is saying he does not want to just play next year out under a 1 year contract. We would still keep rights to him if he does not sign it. It would work kind of like the transition tag at that point I think.

Can teams still use the poison pill? e.g. if player plays 4 games in the state of Louisiana he earns double the highest paid player?

As soon as the new salary cap is announced, loomis et al should crunch some numbers, do their magic and offer all our guys awesome contracts to keep our stars long term. With the new cap expected to be amajor increase, we should be able to offer some nice juicy contracts, even some re-negotiated ones to lock these guys in before the averages shoot up next year.

This post is about Nicks...Not Brees. OMG!!!

I say we pay the guy and if we cant let him walk. He will get payed somewhere. I believe i would have payed Nicks before Evans any day. Both cant be payed. If Nicks don't accept our offer we need to draft a pure guard in the draft or find someone on the market.

Seems like the NFL is going through a youth movement now to me. So we need to draft!

Best case scenario..

- Lock up Brees with a nice deal that's cap savvy
- Franchise Tag Nicks
- Re-sign Colston to a fair deal

in that situation Meachem is most likely to walk though. I'll take that trade off though. Joe Morgan can step right into his explosive down the field position.

I think that's about what will happen. The saints have to approach Drew quickly and get that deal done. When is the last date to use the tag?
I don't think keeping our receivers will be hard. I think upgrading meach is possible to. Meach and Henderson and Colston are big strong downfield blockers who keep their mouth shut and do their job. That "keeping their mouth shut part" might be the hardest part to replace.

To somewhat take a different approach:
Just because a contract hasn't been signed doesn't mean one isn't being worked on. I remember something about being able to sign players after the season, but before free agency without that being a cap violation. It's possible that terms have been agreed to and after the SB we get them signed immediately.

I believe Brees will stay even if not tagged, not so sure about Nicks or Colston but I would say it's 60/40 they stay. It's always possible someone will give one of them an absurd contract.

As someone who dedicates the majority of his time to covering the draft and offseason. You guys are going to take a large hit this year, barring some miracle that Brees signs for under 13 Million a year. The season talks have stalled and he's refusing to sign the franchise. These both indicate that he is want somewhere around 18-20 Mil.

Pat Y. recently posted cap #s, if the Cap does raise to 125 Mil, you guys are sitting at I think 107-8 Mil in cap. in the best situation you guys will only have 6-8 Mil in cap to work with Nicks, Franchise Tagging is out of the equation at that point as the Tag for OGs as someone said is concurrent with the highest paid Olineman, not the highest paid OG. Which would put a FT on Nicks at around 11 Mil. Colston is more than likely gone if you guys resign Nicks. It just isn't feasible that You could sign Nicks and Brees to mega deals with only around 20 Mil in cap space then retain your best WR. Maybe Meachem can be retained, but I really don't see Colston coming back in that case. Now if Nicks leaves I could see Colston coming back, but than Meachem would likely leave as well, as Rodgers and maybe Porter.

This is also not figuring in the total value of this years draft picks which likely be a 3 Mil hit when all combined.

If Loomis somehow pulls it off he should deserve NFL Executive of the year, but the Eagles had to have a Lot of people willingly restructure, and they have one of the best cap managing GMs in the leauge along with the Jets.

Ok so maybe the more important question is, who do we have on our team currently under contract that would be able to willingly re-structure.. So we can fit the deals of Brees, Nicks, Colston all under next years' cap?

Or who can we cut to save cap space?

Maybe Pierre Thomas if you guys are happy with Mark Ingram's progression.
