Do we owe Mickey Loomis more credit than given? (1 Viewer)

He is 23-27 in his 3 seasons without Sean Payton since 2006.

7-9 during BG year, and 16-18 with Deer.

Balanced view:-

1. Don't give Loomis undue credit
Loomis doesn't sign up assistant coaches. The head coach does that.

2. Don't blame Loomis unduly
The WLT of a football team cannot be solely ascribed to it's GM. Or indeed any individual. They are key contributors, perhaps even architects, but not a sole determinant of success/failure.

Probably not fair to hang that 7-9 on him.

It's not like he was going to go out and hire a new coaching staff for one season.

Drew Brees was a rare QB. Franchises go 40 yrs without a Hall of Fame QB. We are going to have some lean years until we get some lightning in a bottle again. Would love for it to be next year, just not sure if DA is the man. Not being Debbie Downer just being realistic. I'll watch and go all in like every year though. I'm a fan.

Loomis bad decisions:
  • DA hire
  • Carr 150M/4yr
  • First round picks Davenport, Turner, Penning
  • Didn’t trade Kamara last year
  • Saints will be cap strapped until 2027.
Loomis good decisions
  • Everything that led to a SB and the 5th best record between 2010-2020.
He is a top 25% GM.

How is Paytons record without Loomis trending. At the end of the careers I think we will see Brees was the most important of all.

Not to defend DA, but on offense he inherited a team where Callaway was the #1 receiver, no TEs - JJ only had 13 catches in 21, and no depth behind Kamara and a meh O-line. The talent on offense was maybe one of the worst in the league. Payton might have been able to keep them barely above .500, but not by much. And no other HC was going to come in and win with the lack of talent on offense and the cap the Saints have to deal with. And how long does it take to build the talent back up through the draft? About 2-3 years.

Brees will never get the recognition he deserves.
He has a championship.
He’s the best player in the Saints history. And the fanbase recognizes it.
He’s still the most hated player by all the other NFCS teams.
He’s gonna be a first ballot HOFer.
He’s gotten the recognition.
