Why would they let a piece called "The Casting Couch" into the contest to begin with?

I guess when they thought it referenced the Harvey Weinsteins of Hollywood they were cool with that... but when they realized it referred to porn, that went too far!

I think that's the point....I'm not against art. I'm against a weird hobby that ends up in a state fair.

Yeah, I guess that having an award for miniature rooms at the same event that awards for butter sculpture and hand-painted gourds is probably weird.

Later, a judge realizes that the piece depicts a porn set. Judges are convened and the award is withdrawn.
How did that conversation go?

"Wait a minute...I recognize that room! It's from Horny Hollywood Hotties 3! "

I probably would have kept that to myself and either let it slide or let someone else bring it up

There's no way that thought process wasn't going on as soon as they started judging the entries. Because it's not like what the "casting couch" can represent is an obscure thing only known to fanatics, people know about it from the news, TV series, movies, etc.

So I would bet at least some, if not all, of the judges knew exactly what it represented, but they were all there going, "Well, I'm not going to be the one to say it..." because sure, they might say, "...because I saw it on the news," but you know they're thinking, "people will assume I know it from porn even if I say that." They might have even been scoring it higher to show just how very much they didn't know what it represented.

Probably one of them then came up with the idea of going, "You'll all be shocked to hear this, but a fact, that I definitely did not know before, has been brought to my attention: this is a pornography set! I know! We're all completely shocked, aren't we?"

Yeah, it really wasn’t that subtle.

Yes, but "casting couch' isn't a porn movie set any more than "Room in No Tell Motel" would be

You really are giving a lot of credit to someone who is judging at a country fair in Kentucky.

This one literally is, according to @Sun Wukong.

And, generally, It's not like it was called 'office with a couch', "casting couch" is a specific euphemism, isn't it? I bet it's even in the dictionary and/or wikipedia. Hang on, I'll check.

Yep! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casting_couch

Having said that, and to completely undermine my own argument, I wondered if maybe they didn't know it was called that, and thought it actually was just an 'office with a couch', and it appears that maybe that was the case: "Poling, 42, said he deliberately avoided putting his magnetic title placard on the set when he entered it. Instead, he waited to see if people would connect the tawdry dots."
