Do you trust Chase Young after getting a market-value contract extension? (1 Viewer)

I wouldn't pay him, but only for my own philosophy w/ Passrushers.

A lot of teams are running quick game offenses now. Meaning that edge rusher outside of a handful snaps a game don't have a huge impact from snap to snap. For instance I don't believe our Dline will be as imporant as our secondary vs Dalllas because DAK isn't holding the ball 3+ seconds. There were 6-7 snaps that Myles Garrett really impacted Dak.

What I will say is that I would build a defense outside in. AKA pay secondary players and try to find impactful DT's that can get to the passer from the interior. Then find DE's like young in the Bargain bin, while trying to draft an impact guy.

Having someone like Chase that pushes the pocket back towards the QB & that makes a difference in the game.
You don't always have to get to the QB in order to be a factor in the game.
It is always good for the secondary when you make the QB move around & not get comfortable in the pocket.
When you can line up Granderson, Bresee, & Chase it limits what an offense can do which also greatly helps your secondary.

Chase did this very well against the Panthers.

I'm all for giving him an extension & keeping him in Black & Gold!

I don't diagree, just a personal preference for interior rushers and building a defense the way the Seahawks did. I just think edge guys can be overvalued in todays NFL when the QB's aren't holding the ball for long.

Cam Jordan has spoken about it on several occasions. When a QB is getting the ball out quickly, doesn't matter how elite you are as an edge rusher...you're not gettin there in 2.4 seconds. However, if you have elite coverage, that makes the QB pull the ball down, or have to move to his second read THEN it helps the passrush get there beause 2.4 seconds turns into 3 seconds or more.

I don't disagree with you either.

I just would prefer to have an elite D-line along with elite DB's.

I'm greedy like that...

I don't think his issue has ever been effort or desire so I'm not concerned that he'd get his money and coast. He just has some bad injury luck so as long as they write in some protection then I'd like to keep him.
He actually has had some history of lack of effort and desire. From both his time in Washington and his short time in San Fran.

He looked amazing in week one, very impressed. If he balls out the whole season I’d pay him.

Our game against Dallas this weekend will put your preferences to the test.
In my opinion Dallas has a much better pass rush than pass coverage.

It will be interesting to see what Kubiak & company do to negate their ability to rush the passer...

Agree with @ELLIASJWILLIAMS on overvaluing DE right now. DA has built an excellent secondary.

Young is being asked to cover 1 inside gap responsibility on run downs. Jordan and Granderson often have outside gap responsibility because they can really 2 gap. A knock on Young in Wash was he only rushes the QB and was undisciplined at that. He would be outside gap responsible but get too wide or too deep to be effective. DA seems to be counteracting that tendency by keeping him inside.

Sure, if we can afford it. He's clearly a difference maker.
I watched every play that he was on the field and the impact he has on pass rush is insane. Even when he doesn’t get to the QB, the hurries and overall impact on the QB is pretty undeniable. He’s special and will likely only get more special as the season moves forward.

We really screwed the pooch with Cam last year. He doesn't look like the 15-20mil DE we're paying for over the next three years. Right now Young appears to be our best DE and pass rusher. If that continues to be the case we need to find a way to pay him. Otherwise we need to draft one next year and that hasn't worked out so good for us in the past.

What a nice call by you!
Dallas's edge rushers were completely shut down!
Dallas's secondary looked slow & not able to cover anyone but our TE...

Nice Call!

I think he is a healthy (and slightly better) version of what we were hoping for with Marcus Davenport. I do think Chase has the potential to be great but he needs to start finishing the pressures he creates with sacks if he wants the big money.

If Young continues to improve and show he can still play at his Ohio State level, do yall trust to give him the contract it is going to take to keep him? I would love to see him step right into Cam's spot. He is still a young cat at 25 and could have 5 solid/great season in him. If he continues to ball out its is going to take a lot to keep him in black and gold.
I think we have to because of the first round busts of P. Turner and Davenport. We require a high quality young up-and-coming DE. Chase Young is that guy. This is a slam dunk move for Micky to keep him here in NOLA. Especially if we go on a nice run, BY would be completely bought-in.

Hope he balls out and gets paid. Doubt the Saints will be able to afford him.
Even if he has a great season, no one is throwing big money at him. He needs at least two good seasons, his previous play won’t be forgotten soon. His best scenario is to play for DA and shine.

I just want to avoid another Junior type situation by giving him a big contract and then the wheels coming off right after.

I would be hesitant to pay Young a multi year extension at market value. Hes a guy thats had effort issues in his career. Risk of him getting the big pay day and then you get a guy thats in coast mode, going through the motions for a paycheck. Not to mention injury history.
