Yea Werner isn’t a guy who will lose you a game like some infamous Saints of the past (FS Bullocks, CB David/Browner, LB Anthony) and I do think he is an above average LB overall who plays consistently above average. He just doesn’t pop out nor does he dominate in any one area of the game, so that contract was a little confusing. The only thing I can assume is that he was one of DA’s guys.Werner is solid I guess, but it would be nice if they could upgrade there. Can't have everything.
I just did an internet search for "offensive coordinators who said Ooh, we better gameplan away from Willie Gay Jr." and came up bupkis. He was only $3M against last year's cap, but it's still another past waste of money and roster spot by Dennis Allen. When anyone is talking up Pete Werner as a way of rationalizing the loss of Willie Gay Jr., then that's a problem. Pete Werner does not scare any OC in the league. Ooh, we better gameplan away from Pete Werner, said no OC ever.
The only issue I have with Werner is injuries, because he seems to miss several games a year. But even with missing 4 games last year... He was still #3 in tackles. I will say this.. he has shown more than Baun did while he was here and look what he did when he left.I think Werner was a Allen guy. He...smh...i hated that extension....and yet I also have to admit he's our most sound smothering tackler. He wasn't a cure but when he came back the tackling improved, but he's not very dynamic at that Will position.
When Davis 1st got here, he played Will his 1st year while Manti Teo played Mike and Klein played Sam. Then Klein slid over to Mike and Davis stayed at Will in Nickel. Davis made far more plays from the Will than Werner makes in the same position. It was the playmaking position int hat scheme and Pete was underwhelming. I guess there's value in being steady and consistent. So i give him props for that.
Werner is below average sideline to sideline. He almost never makes tackles in front of him towards the line of scrimmage...The only issue I have with Werner is injuries, because he seems to miss several games a year. But even with missing 4 games last year... He was still #3 in tackles. I will say this.. he has shown more than Baun did while he was here and look what he did when he left.
To be fair, I think he earned his lack of snaps.
