M*A*S*H did this a lot, most notably the episode where Henry Blake gets to go home.

um, i hate to generalize-- but i'm pretty sure there weren't a lot of bruthas trying to hear no Doobie Bros. back in the 70s in South Central L.A.

My boy Skunk Baxter tearing it up!

I hated all those "message shows", they're sitcoms... Just be funny....

Oh, there are several. I always loved VSE's because they were so damn odd. What would normally be a fluffy sitcom suddenly turned into a drama, and very rarely were the writers or actors equipped to deal with that stuff meaningfully. The result was usually horrible but hilarious. Loved them.

- The episode of Family Ties where Tom Hanks shows up as Alex's drunk uncle. At the end he roughs Alex up while intoxicated and gets kicked out of the house.

- In the 80's there was an epidemic of kids getting trapped in refrigerators, so Punky Brewster did a special episode that dealt with one of the kids getting trapped in a fridge while playing hide and seek.

- There was an episode of Mr. Belevedere where Wesley got molested by the camp counselor.

- The episode of Family Matters where some racist spray paints the N-word on Laura's locker at school.

- The episode of Alf where a tabloid reveals Willy has anonymous sex with homeless men and then smokes crack with them. Oh wait, that was real life. Sorry.

I think I read that back then sitcoms weren't taken seriously and the only way that the actors could get some notice was to have a dramatic episode

For some reason, this one from The Jefferson's sticks out. It's a flashback episode to the when George gets his first dry cleaning store. It coincides with the death of Martin Luther King.

Lol i watched that exact vid on youtube the other day.. and i agree that the ‘Bicycle Man’ ep of Diff’rent Strokes is the one that stands out the most to us Gen Xers, and scared the bejeesus out of us .. poor Dudley .

ETA can we talk about how awesome the best friends’ names of the main characters were on 80s sitcoms ? Dudley is such a funny, perfect best friend name.. or name for a dog.. but it has nothing on Theo’s best friend on the Cosby Show- “Cockroach”.. which has nothing on Mike Seaver’s best friend on Growing Pains - “Boner”.. i even remember one episode where it was revealed that Boner’s real name was ‘Sylvester Stabone’.. god what a time to be alive .
