Five Things Saints in Peter King’s FMIA column; mentions potential Lutz trade to Denver before cutdown (5 Viewers)

You're thinking of Mike Florio.

No....I'm not.....PK trumpeted this same BS every year, along with Bruce Airians being an absolute genius and the Cards winning the SB every year....

That feels risky. Grupe doesn’t seem to have a big leg like Deeeez Lutz does.

Grupe for a sixth would be a coup, though. I have a feeling the Broncos might stink, so that could wind up being closer to a late 5th.
Grupe has been routinely hitting 50+ yard FGs during practice. Whether he can do it in a game is another matter entirely. I have never been ultra-confident in Lutz.

Okay. Sounds like you already knew then.

Not that this is something that ever happens, but if there's a team that needs a kicker and has a good young punter, I'm fine with trading Grupe for him. I'm not convinced that Gillikin or Hedley deserves the job. I expected it from Hedley but it's really disappointing to see that Gillikin has regressed in consistency.
I would cut both of our punters and get a brand new punter from a team that has a tough cut somewhere.

He has some terrible takes at times, like having us take the 1 seed in the NFC last year. As for SP to Jerry’s lap, it’s just been there all along. I do think Sean dreams of being the one to take that team over the hump, and according to rumours it was scheduled happen after the No-Call. Just feels like there’s something there.

If possible, but often times, those guys are subject to the waiver wire, and we would have almost half the league ahead of us.

Lutz's percentage has gone down each of the last three years he's played, finishing a disappointing 74.2% last year. Even if he has a rebound season, that could make assessing his value for a new contract a challenge, and also riskier than would be ideal. I'm with you that I can live with whatever decision is made - Grupe is unproven and not without question marks - but from a roster management standpoint, it could make sense to get something for Lutz while they can, audition Grupe (or another kicker) this season, and see where they are going into next year.
Yet he still has the highest FGM percentage in team history, which is nuts to me.

Yeah, I’ve mentioned before that Andersen was just under 80% for his career and that doesn’t stack up among the best by today’s standard. Interestingly, as of last season, the six most accurate kickers of all-time are all currently playing.

I think with Lutz, the primary concerns are the downward trend and the missed season because of injury. He’s not a bad kicker, but he’s struggled enough that I don’t think he invites the same level of confidence he once did. It’s tough because it’s hard not to feel like we could do better while also knowing we could do worse. Going to be interesting to see how his next contract goes.

Yep...the skill level of today's kicker is off the charts. Go back and look at stats from the 70s and 80s, and you'd be shocked by what was considered good back then.

I have often pondered the idea of making it a little more difficult on these guys by narrowing the goal posts slightly. I don't believe football's forefathers intended the kicking game to be as easy as it has become.
