So I have flown there a few times, but I never considered Newark until now. I'm going to be spending most of my time in Brooklyn (short wedding weekend), and I noticed that travel times on Southwest to Newark are better for my child's sake than flights to Laguardia (the price is a bit better too). Newark geographically looks to be about the same distance as Laguardia to where I'm headed. I just wonder if I'm missing something... Is the traffic really horrible (Id be getting in about 2pm)? Is there a $50 toll? Anyone ever done this? We are flying SWA, so JFK is out.

Driving into Brooklyn? Laguardia.

If not, the shuttle from Newark to Penn is ridiculously easy. A bit of a transfer, but not a horrible surface walk a bit east towards Empire. Great experience for the kid.

You can catch a train from the Newark airport that takes you into NYC. I can't recall how much it cost, over $15 a person one way, maybe more.

The JFK AirTran to Jamaica Station gets you on the subway for $7.50. I'm not sure if the price is comparable, but it's crazy easy and cheap.

Opposite direction.

Dre, where are you going in Brookdeville?

There's a bus that leaves every 15 minutes to port authority - its like 12 bucks. You can catch a subway there to Bk. Driving from Newark to BK ...best way probably be through Staten Island then over the Verrazano. Not really sure about Newark cab drivers and where they are willing to go - the Verrazanno toll is like 14 bucks.

Brooklyn Heights. We are going to have to rent a car, unfortunately, too.

Even though NYC roads can be interseting to say the least, I recommend flying into LaGuardia. The car rentals are a few minutes away by public bus or by shuttles. From there, it's a simple one road trip on the BQE (Brooklyn Queens Expressway). Prolly about a 20 minute drive.

Driving in from Newark would blast you with bridge/tunnel tolls that will break you before getting into Brooklyn. On top of that, the commute would be a good 2 hrs even with decent traffic.

Any reason for HAVING to rent a car?

?

yeah, this is my question
there's really no reason to drive in nyc

but if you don't have to drive then newark easily - NJ trains easier than queens buses, plus laguardia is on again off again worst airport for arr/dep delays

Trust me it may seem like it's closer but it's not you have to go through a tunnel which is like $12.00 now! Then a bridge and traffic. If possible i would definitely do LaGuardia. Jersey smh!

It will honestly be 2 hrs for that short drive? Thats what I was afraid of. the prices and timing into newark are so much better it isn't even funny. the biggest thing is trying to let my 2 year old nap. But if the drive is 2 hours from newark, that is crazy...google maps (which supposedly accounts for traffic) is saying 29 minutes, though.

the car is simply because we are going to shuttle my son around in Brooklyn, and he needs a car seat, so cabs are out. and the hotel, and wedding, and sister's house... i am not sure how subway friendly they all are.

Short answer is that there are probably more strollers in brooklynnitself than any of 20 interior States put together

Gonon mta.org any get a sense of route maps
its true that Brooklyn heights is not as close tonsubway stops as most but that only means it might be 10 blocks which sounds lots longer than it is

But for real if you're not used to driving in nyc its MUCH safer to subway

29 minutes my left nu............nevermind.

It's not necessarily how subway friendly they are, it's a matter of how convenient they can be.

I don't have kids, but I can imagine there must a billion places in Brroklyn for that. Sorry, but I can't help you on that factor.

If it is a 10 block walk, it could be an exciting 10 blocks. Too many variables to name, but suffice it to say that there is plenty to see along the way.

If you're in Manhattan at any time during this trip, I would recommend taking a bus sometimes because you can see more that way. Brooklyn too for that matter (if it's feasible of course).

actually Dre if you tell us where said places are we might be able to help (i lived in boreum hill the next neighborhood next to b heights for years)

geauxboy lives there now

edit;
also, geauxboy is right - there is no conceivable way that trip is only 30 min
you've got airport exit traffic, jersey turnpike traffic, tunnel traffic, midtown traffic, brooklyn bridge traffic - maybe you googled that map at 2am or something, but you're not even getting out of jersey in 30 min

Trying to get through the Holland will be 29 min! It's $12.00 toll is ridiculous! Was $6.50 like 2-3 years ago! I live in Williamsburg. Have been in NY for 15 years and have sat in that traffic plenty. PLUS it's Jersey... JERSEY!!!! Who wants to even go there? You have to pay to get into Manhattan but not Jersey!! Trust.. Go LGA or even JFK for that matter!

Sidebar- All of you that live in NY should get that Jersey Joke!
