Before starting the first official practice of the 2013 season for his fifth grade boys AAU basketball team, the Kenner Guardian Angels, head coach and former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Torrance Small had to stop and show his appreciation to the community of people who helped make it possible. To do so, he held a small ceremony in the Williams Boulevard Baptist Church gym last Thursday before the boys took the court.

“To be able to have all of this, the nice shirts, the nice shoes, the coaches’ shirts, and all the different travel and practices, and all the games we have to play, it takes a group,” said Small during the ceremony.

The group of sponsors included in the celebration was hotel chain Hilton, which presented a $1,500 check during the ceremony; Williams Boulevard Baptist Church, which donated the use of its gym for the team's practice time; and parent and physician Victoria A. Smith, who donated $5,000 to the team, “I was so happy to be able to donate and support the team," she said.
