I actually thought about Sidwell last off-season when we were all calling for DA's job. I mean if you like Fangio, you should love Sidwell right??

I'm really sorry to hear about his passing but hopefully there's solace in knowing that Saints fans still revere him. He's an all time Saints Great!

All of them on that defensive coach sides were great. John Pease was very underrated. Vic Fangio and Dom Capers became NFL coaches.

Perhaps my all-time favorite Saints assistant coach. An excellent defensive coordinator. My memory is that Jim Mora fired him--the two had had a long professional relationship and friendship--because of a dispute between Sidwell, who was the defensive coordinator, and Jim Mora, Jr., who was the defensive-backs coach.

I was wondering why they let him go. In those days there wasn't much news about coordinator or social media to know the real story behind it.

RIP. I remember whenever they'd show a shot of him in the booth he'd be smoking cigarettes while he called the defense (oh, how times have changed). Never thought it made sense when they let him go.

Seriously? I swear I remember a seeing a coach smoking in the booth, more than once, during the Mora era. Maybe it was just one of the assistants that was smoking?

You might be thinking of Jim Finks. He was a known puffer. It’s what literally killed him in the end.
