I thought Miami put on a great event. The whole thing just looked awesome and fun. Race wasn’t super but it wasn’t bad, we had an overtake for the lead/win. Those fake boats in the fake marina were cool - sooo Miami (to do a cheesy fake Monaco).

Max just had too much straight line speed.

Do you just mean Hamilton? Because Russell has been in the top 5 in every race so far.

No, I meant Russell too. Scrapping together a top 5 (with a well timed safety car and Bottas driving off course late in the race, for example) isn’t what Mercedes is after. And he hasn’t been in any sort of position to threaten for a podium.

Being in the top 5 in the first races of the season is nothing to dismiss. Granted it's not what Mercedes is used to but Russell is racing very well right now and been a lot of commenting on his performance this year. It's Hamilton who seems to be struggling far more than Russell when it comes to team performance.

I think the discussion is more about the car - they’re 62 points down in the constructors standings. They threw a new package at it in Miami and it didn’t work. Maybe they’ll get it fixed but they’ve won 8 constructors championships in a row. The longer it goes without them threatening for wins, the more in jeopardy that steak gets

Yeah, but it's tougher when Ferrari is having the success they've had and Red Bull is always a factor. Only so many podiums to go around. I wonder much of it is the redesigned car as opposed to falloff of performance of the team.

I agree with you though, top 5 isn't really what Mercedes is after considering their recent success.

It's definitely the redesign of the car. It was the most significant new construction parameters in years.

The Mercedes just lacks balance and stability that the others have been able to get - both drivers and Toto have talked about it. The car is porpoising (a bouncy condition caused by the new airflow routes under the 2022 car) worse than the Ferrari and Red Bull, and at Miami, Russell said the rear end was bouncing into the corners (which kills grip). Red Bull was apparently able to reduce their porpoising quite a bit, so maybe Mercedes will find a fix and get competitive.

Nice summary of why the Ferraris are qualifying well and fast in the corners but Red Bull are better in the Gran Prix, at least on tracks with high-end straight line speed.

Ferrari isn’t going anywhere. Reports are Mercedes has improved on the porpoising. And both Haas in the top 10.

Seems to me that the top 6 are going to be the top 6 for the remainder of the year.

Lots of danger today at Barcelona. Both Max and Sainz losing the rear end getting into turn 4 and taking a run through the gravel.

98 degrees air temp.
